Book excerpt: Chapter 2 This document focuses on estimating the effect of innovative effort on productivity, when it is disaggregated in terms of productive technical efficiency and other components associated with demand and unit input costs. These components are developed and estimated from panel data. I show that demand characteristics are the elements where the innovative effort affects in greater proportion. These results will be analyzed from the annual manufacturing survey (EAM) between 2003-2012 and the surveys of innovation and technological development for the manufacturing industry (EDIT) provided by the DANE between 2008-2012. Book excerpt: Fernandes explores Colombian trade policy from 1977-91, a period of substantial variation in protection across industries, to examine whether increased exposure to foreign competition generates plant-level productivity gains. Using a large panel of manufacturing plants, she finds a strong positive impact of tariff liberalization on consistent productivity estimates, controlling for plant and industry heterogeneity. This result is not driven by the endogeneity of protection nor by plant exit. The impact of tariff liberalization on productivity is stronger for large plants and for plants in less competitive industries. Qualitatively similar results are obtained when using effective rates of protection and import penetration ratios as measures of protection. This paper--a product of Investment Climate, Development Research Group--is part of a larger effort in the group to understand the links between trade and productivity.

Book excerpt: This study analyses the effects of innovation on employment in Colombian firms for the manufacturing and service sectors in two different periods: 2007-2010 for the manufacturing industry, and 2010-2011 for the service industry. Based on the theoretical framework proposed by Harrison et al. (2014), we test this relationship using instrumental variables techniques. Data proceed from The Annual Manufacturing Survey, The Development and Technological Innovation Industrial Survey, and The Development and Technological Innovation Services Survey, all of them collected by the Colombian National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE). Our empirical results show that sales growth due to new products positively affects employment growth, and process innovation has not a displacement effect on employment growth. This is robust to different specifications and the inclusion of control variables.
