Book Synopsis Writing Vocabulary Problems & Communication Strategies of L2 Learners by : Yuah V. Chon

Book excerpt: Despite the evidence that lack of vocabulary is what contributes to making writing in a foreign language most difficult, there is currently lack of research on how words get produced as the second language (L2) learner attempts to write in L2. These lexical gap problems will prompt writers to employ communication strategies (CS) which are procedural skills that learners use to overcome the inadequacies of their interlanguage resources (e.g. approximation, circumlocution, transfer, appeal for assistance). The literature on analyzing writing CS for solving communication gap problems in L2 writing has not been expanded as much as in studies with speaking tasks. The findings prompted the researcher to analyze the CS that are employed by second language university learners when writers try to solve their lexical gap problems, including what strategies to use when only word partially known. The results contribute to devising a psychologically plausible taxonomy that may help researchers and teachers to look into the often opaque and transient writing processes of L2 writers.

Book Synopsis Language Learner Strategies by : A. D. Cohen

Download or read book Language Learner Strategies written by A. D. Cohen. This book was released on 2013-05-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a unique and timely re-examination of key issues such as strategies in context, strategy instruction, and strategy research methods by numerous experts in the field. Offers an invaluable overview of what is known from empirical research about listening, reading, speaking, writing, vocabulary, and grammar strategies. Proposes a clear and focused research agenda for the next decades. Research into language learner strategies has the fundamental goal of improving the teaching and learning of second languages. This book explores the notion that the reason some learners of second languages excel and others struggle lies in what the learners themselves do-the strategies they bring to language learning and to language use.

Book Synopsis Communication Strategies by : Gabriele Kasper

Download or read book Communication Strategies written by Gabriele Kasper. This book was released on 2014-06-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the topic of communication strategies, the ways in which people seek to express themselves or understand what someone else is saying or writing. Typically, the term has referred to the strategies that non-native speakers use to address the linguistic and pragmatic problems encountered in interactions with native and non-native speakers of the language in question. Studies adopting a psycholinguistic perspective are well represented and updated in this volume. Other chapters re-examine communication strategies from a sociolinguistic perspective, exploring the strategies non-native speakers and their conversational partners use to create shared meanings in ongoing discourse. These studies reveal how communication strategies can serve to construct participants' identities and social relationships. Finally, the book incorporates a number of chapters which cover strategy-like behaviour in other related areas, such as language pathology, child bilingualism, normal native adult interaction, and mother tongue education. These studies add fresh dimensions to the study of communication strategies, showing how the concept can usefully be extended beyond the realm of second language acquisition and use, and pointing out the commonalities in many domains of language behaviour.

Book Synopsis Lexical Issues in L2 Writing by : Katalin Doró

Download or read book Lexical Issues in L2 Writing written by Katalin Doró. This book was released on 2015-09-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research into lexical issues has been one of the most rapidly growing areas of second language acquisition studies in recent years, and understandably so: the importance of vocabulary can hardly be denied. Words are the key to every instance of communication, both spoken and written. This volume concentrates on vocabulary in written language, mostly in academic settings. The writers of the chapters come from different countries and universities, and, naturally, represent their own academic backgrounds, though they all share a common interest in investigating the characteristics of L2 lexis as it manifests itself in the written production of students at various stages of their language learning careers. The target language (L2) in the studies reported in the volume is English, except in one study on the lexical competence of multilingual learners of French. The subjects’ native languages include Czech, Danish, Finnish, Hungarian, and Swedish, thus representing several different language families. Each chapter constitutes an independent unit, but together the studies reported in them give the reader a varied and extensive picture of lexical issues in L2 writing. The authors approach their topics from different perspectives and use diverse research methods, adding to the multifaceted nature of the volume. The book will be of interest to researchers, educators and students of second language acquisition and applied linguistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together three important aspects within strategy studies. First, it reviews the most outstanding previous studies in the field of vocabulary learning and communication strategies and their role in the second language acquisition and teaching process. Second, it provides empirical research testing general hypotheses in the field on how vocabulary learning strategies are a key component of vocabulary development and how their training improves their frequency of use and effectiveness. Finally, the book proposes a program for strategy training in the L2 classroom and illustrates it with examples from concrete vocabulary learning strategies and proposes exercises to apply them in an autonomous way. This volume will shed light on the field of vocabulary learning strategies and illustrate their practical utility in the foreign language classroom in order to improve the knowledge that teachers and learners have of them.
