Book excerpt: Research into lexical issues has been one of the most rapidly growing areas of second language acquisition studies in recent years, and understandably so: the importance of vocabulary can hardly be denied. Words are the key to every instance of communication, both spoken and written. This volume concentrates on vocabulary in written language, mostly in academic settings. The writers of the chapters come from different countries and universities, and, naturally, represent their own academic backgrounds, though they all share a common interest in investigating the characteristics of L2 lexis as it manifests itself in the written production of students at various stages of their language learning careers. The target language (L2) in the studies reported in the volume is English, except in one study on the lexical competence of multilingual learners of French. The subjects’ native languages include Czech, Danish, Finnish, Hungarian, and Swedish, thus representing several different language families. Each chapter constitutes an independent unit, but together the studies reported in them give the reader a varied and extensive picture of lexical issues in L2 writing. The authors approach their topics from different perspectives and use diverse research methods, adding to the multifaceted nature of the volume. The book will be of interest to researchers, educators and students of second language acquisition and applied linguistics.

Book Synopsis Writing Vocabulary Problems & Communication Strategies of L2 Learners by : Yuah V. Chon

Download or read book Writing Vocabulary Problems & Communication Strategies of L2 Learners written by Yuah V. Chon. This book was released on 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the evidence that lack of vocabulary is what contributes to making writing in a foreign language most difficult, there is currently lack of research on how words get produced as the second language (L2) learner attempts to write in L2. These lexical gap problems will prompt writers to employ communication strategies (CS) which are procedural skills that learners use to overcome the inadequacies of their interlanguage resources (e.g. approximation, circumlocution, transfer, appeal for assistance). The literature on analyzing writing CS for solving communication gap problems in L2 writing has not been expanded as much as in studies with speaking tasks. The findings prompted the researcher to analyze the CS that are employed by second language university learners when writers try to solve their lexical gap problems, including what strategies to use when only word partially known. The results contribute to devising a psychologically plausible taxonomy that may help researchers and teachers to look into the often opaque and transient writing processes of L2 writers.

Book Synopsis L2 Writing in Secondary Classrooms by : Luciana C. de Oliveira

Download or read book L2 Writing in Secondary Classrooms written by Luciana C. de Oliveira. This book was released on 2013-03-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second language writers and the teaching of writing at the secondary level have received little attention compared with other skills such as reading. Addressing this gap, this volume uniquely looks at both adolescent L2 writing and the preparation of secondary teachers to work with this population of students. Part I, on adolescent L2 writers, includes case studies looking at their literacy identities, their trajectories in mainstream content area classes, and their transition from high school to college. Part II looks at academic issues. The focus in Part III is L2 writing teacher education. Taking a theoretically eclectic approach that can support a variety of pedagogies, this book contributes significantly to understanding adolescent second language writers and to educating teachers to address these students’ specific needs.
