Book excerpt: The reeducation practices of communist Romania ended in 1951 with the transfer of political prisoners from Pitesti to the Danube-Black Sea Canal labor camps. After a mysterious process, these convicts became fanatical adherents to the regime, engaging in the torture of fellow convicts. When these acts became public, the regime responded with a series of trials against the prisoner-torturers, thereby shielding itselse and penitentiary staff members any complicity in these events. Mircea Stanescu conducts an impartial analysis of the reeducation trials and their unfolding consequences, extracting pertinent historical information from widespread ideological distortion. In order to do this, Stanescu draws on groundbreaking investigations into Pitesti and Romanian concentration camps, drawing on the work of Robert Conquest, Annie Kriegel, and other scholars who have researched communism and communist show trials.

Book excerpt: Very little is known--not only by the Western world but also by the Romanian youth--about the magnitude of the horrors the communist regime in Romania committed over its 40 years of dictatorship. This book is a collection of essays written between 1995 and 2011, chronicling the experiences and presenting the views of a former political prisoner about past and current events in Romanian history. A retired professor of operations research, Boldur-Latescu is one of the few survivors of the 'Pitesti Phenomenon', the experiment launched in the 1950's in communist prisons by the Romanian Securitate, which aimed at re-educating political prisoners through peer exerted torture. This book is a continuation of the analysis that started with "The Communist Genocide in Romania", published in 2005 by Nova Publishers) with a particular emphasis on the examination of the social, political, cultural, and economic evolution of Romania after the 1989 Revolution. Some of the essays go beyond the analysis of the Romanian context by tackling current challenges faced by Western democracies through a unique prism. The link between communism and terrorism, the lack of reference to Christian values in the EU Constitution, and the relevance of Tolstoy's work or the Testament left by Peter the Great to the current situation in world politics, are only a few examples of the author's unique interpretation of current world events.

Book excerpt: This book examines how the process of remembering Stalinist repression in Romania has shifted from individual, family, and group representations of lived and witnessed experiences characteristic of the 1990s to more recent and state-sponsored expressions of historical remembrance through their incorporation in official commemorations, propaganda sites, and restorative and compensatory measures. Based on fieldwork dealing with Stalinist repression and memorialization, together with archival research on the secret police (Securitate), it adopts an interdisciplinary approach to reveal the resurfacing of particular themes. As such it draws on concepts from sociology, political science, and legal studies, related to memory, justice, redress, identity, accountability, and reconciliation. Book excerpt: This book deals with six trials, conducted by the Romanian state against Jewish key officials employed in state-owned import-export companies between 1950 and 1960. It begins with a presentation of the political realities of Romania following the Communist Party's rise to power, in particular those regarding its relationship with Romania's Jews and Gheorghiu-Dej’s policy of National Communism. Rozenberg describes the criminal procedure used in the staged economic trials follows and then examines this procedure based on the legal system of the period, as exemplified by the six analyzed trials. The Românoexport Jewish officials' trial is analyzed in depth, as the case study of the whole book. This book concludes by bringing to light two phenomena that dissipate some mystique surrounding the events: first, the state's practice of using its legal system as a means of oppressing the population; and second, the stereotypical image of "The Jew" which the regime in Romania developed. Despite its supposed anti-religiosity, it held on to centuries-old prejudices against Jews as pariahs, with supposed allegiance to foreign elements preferred over their surrounding society, even to the point of betraying and exploiting their own country.
