Download or read book The Monarch and the (Non)-Human in Literature and Cinema written by Nizar Zouidi. This book was released on 2023. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection studies the representations of the character of the monarch in literature and cinema. Being a person, an institution, a character archetype and a narrative role, the character of the monarch and other royal or regal characters oscillate between humanity and the non-human. As such, they are hybrid forms of existence and subjectivity. The authors of this collection explore this hybridity across large spectra of genres, historical periods and cultural contexts. Some of the most prolific and widely-read scholars analyze the archetype of the monarch on the page, the stage and the screen. They cover large swathes of intersecting creative and interpretive territories including ancient epic and religious poetry, Arthurian legends, British Renaissance and modern drama, British horror films, and Hollywood crime and sports films. This collection also features interviews with six prominent comic book writers and artists who discuss the influence of classical royal archetypes on their works"--

Book Synopsis Gendered Violence and Human Rights in Black World Literature and Film by : Naomi Nkealah

Download or read book Gendered Violence and Human Rights in Black World Literature and Film written by Naomi Nkealah. This book was released on 2021-03-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how the intersection between gendered violence and human rights is depicted and engaged with in Africana literature and films. The rich and multifarious range of film and literature emanating from Africa and the diaspora provides a fascinating lens through which we can understand the complex consequences of gendered violence on the lives of women, children and minorities. Contributors to this volume examine the many ways in which gendered violence mirrors, expresses, projects and articulates the larger phenomenon of human rights violations in Africa and the African diaspora and how, in turn, the discourse of human rights informs the ways in which we articulate, interrogate, conceptualise and interpret gendered violence in literature and film. The book also shines a light on the linguistic contradictions and ambiguities in the articulation of gendered violence in private spaces and war. This book will be essential reading for scholars, critics, feminists, teachers and students seeking solid grounding in exploring gendered violence and human rights in theory and practice.

Book Synopsis Monstrosity and Global Crisis in Transnational Film, Media and Literature by : Steven Rawle

Download or read book Monstrosity and Global Crisis in Transnational Film, Media and Literature written by Steven Rawle. This book was released on 2024-07-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monsters have always rampant border crossers, from Dracula’s journey from Romania to Whitby, to the rampaging monsters of Godzilla movies across global cities. This volume studies how their transnationality reflects an era of global crisis. Monstrosity has long been explored in a number of ways that connect gender, sexuality, class, race, nationality and other forms of otherness with depictions of monsters or monstrosity. This book, however, explores cultural flow as it relates to the construction of a transnational genre, by both producers and audiences. It also examines the ramifications of representations of monstrosity in socio-political terms as they relate to a tumultuous era of global crises. This era has of course been amplified and altered by the Covid pandemic, which frames much of the content of this collection. This ongoing crisis imbues the discourses of monstrosity, global catastrophe and societal and human vulnerability with its significant expression in artistic terms.
