Book Synopsis Monstrosity and Global Crisis in Transnational Film, Media and Literature by : Steven Rawle

Download or read book Monstrosity and Global Crisis in Transnational Film, Media and Literature written by Steven Rawle. This book was released on 2024-07-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monsters have always rampant border crossers, from Dracula’s journey from Romania to Whitby, to the rampaging monsters of Godzilla movies across global cities. This volume studies how their transnationality reflects an era of global crisis. Monstrosity has long been explored in a number of ways that connect gender, sexuality, class, race, nationality and other forms of otherness with depictions of monsters or monstrosity. This book, however, explores cultural flow as it relates to the construction of a transnational genre, by both producers and audiences. It also examines the ramifications of representations of monstrosity in socio-political terms as they relate to a tumultuous era of global crises. This era has of course been amplified and altered by the Covid pandemic, which frames much of the content of this collection. This ongoing crisis imbues the discourses of monstrosity, global catastrophe and societal and human vulnerability with its significant expression in artistic terms.

Book excerpt: This book is about communication, a universal, yet particular, form of linking people and ideas. It details the growing and multiform uses, functions, interactions, and effects of communication in the contemporary “world-society”, and highlights the dialectic between society and communication. It will also serve to stimulate critical thinking. The book is structured as a compendium of the sociology of communication, providing a practical and pedagogical-didactic resource especially for students, including case studies, summary-tables, questions for review, and excerpts from selected works and authors. This book is a major contribution to cultural, media, and digital studies, and will be of interest to those who live in an increasingly digital, technological, and global society, and want to understand a phenomenon as social as it is inevitable, spontaneous, and influential.

Download or read book Yesterday's Tomorrows written by Pere Gallardo. This book was released on 2014-03-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2012 was a year of financial crises and ecological disasters, of endings and forebodings. The world did not end on December 21st as the Mayan calendar predicted, but became the stage for new beginnings, utopian communities, protest groups and solidarity movements. The essays in this book form an intertextual space for negotiating meaningful facts and fictions with an aim to understanding the present. Discussions focus on utopia and dystopia from literature and film, not only within the framework of science fiction but also critical theory, gender politics and social sciences. The authors of these essays are international academics whose interest lies in utopian studies and who attended the 13th International Conference of Utopian Studies, “The Shape of Things to Come”, held in Tarragona, Spain, in 2012.

Book excerpt: While there are hundreds of books on leadership, no other book links epidemiological concepts to leadership. Epidemiologists look for treatments by matching the determinants to the disease. As such, this book not only identifies leadership determinants, but also matches research-based antidotes to them at the end of each chapter. The book includes over 550 references on leadership, psychology, epidemiology, management, systems theory, and others, as well as over 60 case studies analyzed to illustrate points about leadership and determinants. Additionally, each chapter includes a list of key terms and concepts, discussion items, and highlights of lessons learned. At the end of the book, there is a section on leadership and motivation theories and models, as well as a section that provides leadership style surveys and assessments that can help readers identify their leadership style, while also becoming aware of what changes in leadership style can improve workplace climate.

Book Synopsis Managerial Dilemmas in Developing Countries by : Malcolm J. M. Cooper

Download or read book Managerial Dilemmas in Developing Countries written by Malcolm J. M. Cooper. This book was released on 2019-04-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since organizations and industries are the catalysts for sustainable development, managing organizations and industries along with resource protection dilemmas is critical for developing countries. This volume brings together contributions from experts and new researchers on managerial dilemmas in developing countries, and is divided into five parts: namely, organizational development; human resource management; consumer behaviour; finance; and tourism and hospitality. The chapters in the first section provide empirical insights into e-learning systems, information systems for decision-making processes, business reengineering, and performance efficiency. The second part explores the role of human resource, organization downsizing, work-life balance, fair treatment and a good working environment, job satisfaction and job stress, the big five personality traits, and psychological contract and employment. The next section investigates bank interest rates, insurance policies, organic foods in consumer behaviour, and a marketing value chain analysis of cinnamon. Studies of the effect of financial development, foreign direct investment on economic and endogenous growth, and the effect of institutional excellence and information efficiency on stock market development make up the fourth part of the book. The fifth section then embraces studies of the impact of tourist guides on tourist satisfaction, the behavioural characteristics of solo female travellers, community participation in tourism, and the unplanned development of tourism.
