Book excerpt: Britain in the sixteenth century appeared little different from its European neighbours, and shared their renewed 'Malthusian' pressures, as population growth threatened the resource base of the economy. Yet, by the later seventeenth century, Britain had broken the limits imposed by food production. With the development of its trade, transport and industry, and the effective integration of its economy as a whole, the country was becoming by the later eighteenth century more urban and industrial than its neighbours, and was rapidly overtaking the Netherlands as the least 'rural' country in Europe. This volume of key readings sets British development in its broad context and, in presenting the strong evidence of the extent and nature of its economic advance in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, provides the critical backgrond for the understanding of the late process of British industrialization.

Book Synopsis The Industrial Revolution in World History by : Peter N. Stearns

Download or read book The Industrial Revolution in World History written by Peter N. Stearns. This book was released on 2020-11-16. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its fifth edition, this book explores the ways in which the industrial revolution reshaped world history, covering the international factors that helped launch the industrial revolution, its global spread and its impact from the end of the eighteenth century to the present day. The single most important development in human history over the past three centuries, the industrial revolution continues to shape the contemporary world. Revised and brought into the present, this fifth edition of Peter N. Stearns’ The Industrial Revolution in World History extends his global analysis of the industrial revolution. Looking beyond the West, the book considers India, the Middle East and China and now includes more on key Latin American economies and Africa as well as the heightened tensions, since 2008, about the economic aspects of globalization and the decline of manufacturing in the West. This edition also features a new chapter on key historiographical debates, updated suggestions for further reading and boxed debate features that encourage the reader to consider diversity and different viewpoints in their own analysis, and pays increased attention to the environmental impacts. Illustrating the contemporary relevance of the industrial revolution's history, this is essential reading for students of world history and economics, as well as for those seeking to know more about the global implications of what is arguably the defining socioeconomic event of modern times.

Download or read book The Industrial Revolutions, 11 Volume Set written by Roy A. Church. This book was released on 1994-05-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economic History Society, in association with Blackwell Publishers, announces the publication in eleven volumes of a new collection of seminal articles on the industrial revolutions worldwide. Each volume includes twenty to twenty-five articles representing the most influential writing on the subject, accompanied by editorial introductions surveying the main strands of intellectual advancement and the important conceptual advances that have characterized research on the topics under consideration. The collection forms a set of volumes on all aspects of the Industrial Revolution, providing a unique resource for libraries with collections in economics and history. Together, they give an insight into the development of research on the subject over the last 50 years. The Industrial Revolutions under discussion are the first industrial revolution - the period of the cotton mill and the steam engine, rather than electrical engineering, fine chemicals and the internal combustion engine. The Industrial Revolutions were events of such profound and continuing importance for all societies that achieving a better understanding of their nature must be a prominent aspect of the educational objectives of both individuals and institutions.
