Book excerpt: The Economic History Society, in association with Blackwell Publishers, announces the publication in eleven volumes of a new collection of seminal articles on the industrial revolutions worldwide. Each volume includes twenty to twenty-five articles representing the most influential writing on the subject, accompanied by editorial introductions surveying the main strands of intellectual advancement and the important conceptual advances that have characterized research on the topics under consideration. The collection forms a set of volumes on all aspects of the Industrial Revolution, providing a unique resource for libraries with collections in economics and history. Together, they give an insight into the development of research on the subject over the last 50 years. The Industrial Revolutions under discussion are the first industrial revolution - the period of the cotton mill and the steam engine, rather than electrical engineering, fine chemicals and the internal combustion engine. The Industrial Revolutions were events of such profound and continuing importance for all societies that achieving a better understanding of their nature must be a prominent aspect of the educational objectives of both individuals and institutions.

Book Synopsis The Industrial Revolutions, Volume 1 by : J. Chartres

Download or read book The Industrial Revolutions, Volume 1 written by J. Chartres. This book was released on 1994-03-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain in the sixteenth century appeared little different from its European neighbours, and shared their renewed 'Malthusian' pressures, as population growth threatened the resource base of the economy. Yet, by the later seventeenth century, Britain had broken the limits imposed by food production. With the development of its trade, transport and industry, and the effective integration of its economy as a whole, the country was becoming by the later eighteenth century more urban and industrial than its neighbours, and was rapidly overtaking the Netherlands as the least 'rural' country in Europe. This volume of key readings sets British development in its broad context and, in presenting the strong evidence of the extent and nature of its economic advance in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, provides the critical backgrond for the understanding of the late process of British industrialization.

Book Synopsis The Industrial Revolutions in Europe II, Volume 5 by : Patrick O'Brien

Download or read book The Industrial Revolutions in Europe II, Volume 5 written by Patrick O'Brien. This book was released on 1994-04-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern European economic history is marked by an endeavor to transcend the traditional national case study approach, to use comparisons and to deploy economic theory in order to draw the manifold and diverse experiences of the regions, countries and multicultural empires of Europe onto a unified frame of reference. These two volumes exemplify this modern approach. This Volume 5, of the eleven part set entitled Industrial Revolutions contains thirteen papers, with an introduction, which adopt and apply a conceptual and explicitly comparative approach to European economic history as a whole. Volume 5 includes sixteen national case studies, again organized around or set within the context of theoretical principles and ideas derived largely from macroeconomic theory, social accounting, productivity measurement and regional analysis.
