Book excerpt: Assembling a program in bioinorganic chemistry that is scientifi cally relevant, well defined, and self-consistent is not an easy task. In this attempt we decided to consider zinc enzymes, copper oxidases, cytochromes and cytochrome oxidase. The choice is in part due to the great attention that the current specialized literature devotes to these topics, which are now debated among chemists, biochemists, biophysicists, etc .. We believe that hydration reactions, hydrolytic and oxidative processes have much in common from the point of view of the reaction mechanisms, the comprehension of which represents a frontier of science. For these reasons these topics have been the subject of the NATO-ASI held at San Miniato, Pisa, Italy, from May 28 to June 8, 1982. We hope we can transfer here the main conclusions of what (we believe) was a very stimulating scientific meeting. We would like to thank the local saving bank, Cassa di Risparmio di San Miniato, for helping in many ways. The financial contribution from the European Research Office of the US Army, and from the Bruker Spectrospin s.r.l., Italy, is also acknowledged. The National Science Foundation of the United States has provided a travel grant to one of the participants from the U.S.A. We are grateful to the NATO Scientific Affairs Division which provided a grant to finance this Institute.

Book Synopsis Chemistry of Metalloproteins by : Joseph J. Stephanos

Download or read book Chemistry of Metalloproteins written by Joseph J. Stephanos. This book was released on 2014-07-22. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addresses the full gamut of questions in metalloprotein science Formatted as a question-and-answer guide, this book examines all major families of metal binding proteins, presenting our most current understanding of their structural, physicochemical, and functional properties. Moreover, it introduces new and emerging medical applications of metalloproteins. Readers will discover both the underlying chemistry and biology of this important area of research in bioinorganic chemistry. Chemistry of Metalloproteins features a building block approach that enables readers to master the basics and then advance to more sophisticated topics. The book begins with a general introduction to bioinorganic chemistry and metalloproteins. Next, it covers: Alkali and alkaline earth cations Metalloenzymes Copper proteins Iron proteins Vitamin B12 Chlorophyll Chapters are richly illustrated to help readers fully grasp all the chemical concepts that govern the biological action of metalloproteins. In addition, each chapter ends with a list of suggested original research articles and reviews for further investigation of individual topics. Presenting our most current understanding of metalloproteins, Chemistry of Metalloproteins is recommended for students and researchers in coordination chemistry, biology, and medicine. Each volume of the Wiley Series in Protein and Peptide Science addresses a specific facet of the field, reviewing the latest findings and presenting a broad range of perspectives. The volumes in this series constitute essential reading for biochemists, biophysicists, molecular biologists, geneticists, cell biologists, and physiologists as well as researchers in drug design and development, proteomics, and molecular medicine with an interest in proteins and peptides.

Book Synopsis Synthetic Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry by : Alexander D. Garnovskii

Download or read book Synthetic Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry written by Alexander D. Garnovskii. This book was released on 2003-04-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference describes standard and nonstandard coordination modes of ligands in complexes, the intricacies of polyhedron-programmed and regioselective synthesis, and the controlled creation of coordination compounds such as molecular and hn-p-complexes, chelates, and homo- and hetero-nuclear compounds. It offers a clear and concise review of modern synthetic techniques of metal complexes as well as lesser known gas- and solid-phase synthesis, electrosynthesis, and microwave and ultrasonic treatment of the reaction system. The authors pay special attention to o-hydroxyazomethines and their S-, Se-containing analogues, b-diketones, and quinines, among others, and examine the immediate interaction of ligands and metal salts or carbonyls.
