Book Synopsis Stroke Genetics by : Hugh S. Markus

Book excerpt: Stroke is a major cause of death and the major cause of adult neurological disability in most of the world. Despite its importance on a population basis, research into the genetics of stroke has lagged behind that of many other disorders. However, the situation is now changing. Anincreasing number of single gene disorders causing stroke are being described, and there is growing evidence that polygenic factors are important in the risk of apparently "sporadic" stroke.Stroke Genetics provides an up-to-date review of the area, suitable for clinicians treating stroke patients, and both clinical and non-clinical researchers in the field of cerebrovascular disease. The full range of monogenic stroke disorders causing cerebrovascular disease, including ischaemicstroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, are covered. For each, clinical features, diagnosis, and genetics are described. Increasing evidence suggest that genetic factors are also important for the much more common multifactorial stroke; this evidence isreviewed along with the results of genetic studies in this area. Optimal and novel strategies for investigating multifactorial stroke, including the use of intermediate phenotypes such as intima-media thickness and MRI detected small vessel disease are reviewed. The book concludes by describing apractical approach to investigating patients with stroke for underlying genetic disorders. Also included is a list of useful websites.

Book Synopsis Stroke Genetics by : Pankaj Sharma

Download or read book Stroke Genetics written by Pankaj Sharma. This book was released on 2012-08-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade there has been a substantial increase in our understanding of the genetic basis of common disorders such as stroke. Stroke Genetics is designed to give the reader an overall understanding of the genetics of complex diseases by using stroke as a paradigm. The reader will gain a comprehensive understanding of cerebrovascular genetics including the epidemiological evidence for the genetic basis of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, knowledge of its molecular basis from association, linkage and recent genome-wide studies, and also monogenic disorders. Finally, the legal and ethical complexities in dealing with these issues are discussed. Stroke Genetics benefits from the contribution of renowned experts from throughout the world who have been intimately involved in unraveling the genetic etiology of stroke. Stroke Genetics is a valuable resource for neurologists, stroke physicians, hypertension specialists, internists, clinical pharmacologists and those in training, as well as researchers in the field of disease genetics.

Book Synopsis Molecular Genetics of Stroke by : Yoshiji Yamada

Download or read book Molecular Genetics of Stroke written by Yoshiji Yamada. This book was released on 2012-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stroke is an important clinical problem because of its large contribution to mortality. The main causal and treatable risk factors for stroke include hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and smoking. In addition to these risk factors, recent studies have shown the importance of genetic factors and interactions between multiple genes and environmental factors. Genetic linkage analyses of families and sib-pairs as well as candidate gene association studies have implicated several loci and many candidate genes in predisposition to ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, or subarachnoid hemorrhage. Recent genome-wide association studies identified various loci and genes that confer susceptibility to ischemic stroke or intracranial aneurysm. Such studies may provide insight into the function of implicated genes as well as into the role of genetic factors in the development of ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, or subarachnoid hemorrhage. Table of Contents: Introduction / Genetics of Stroke / Single-Gene Disorders Associated with Stroke / Genetics of Common Forms of Stroke / Clinical Implications / Conclusion / References / Titles of Related Interest
