Book Synopsis Molecular Genetics of Stroke by : Yoshiji Yamada

Download or read book Molecular Genetics of Stroke written by Yoshiji Yamada. This book was released on 2012-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stroke is an important clinical problem because of its large contribution to mortality. The main causal and treatable risk factors for stroke include hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and smoking. In addition to these risk factors, recent studies have shown the importance of genetic factors and interactions between multiple genes and environmental factors. Genetic linkage analyses of families and sib-pairs as well as candidate gene association studies have implicated several loci and many candidate genes in predisposition to ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, or subarachnoid hemorrhage. Recent genome-wide association studies identified various loci and genes that confer susceptibility to ischemic stroke or intracranial aneurysm. Such studies may provide insight into the function of implicated genes as well as into the role of genetic factors in the development of ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, or subarachnoid hemorrhage. Table of Contents: Introduction / Genetics of Stroke / Single-Gene Disorders Associated with Stroke / Genetics of Common Forms of Stroke / Clinical Implications / Conclusion / References / Titles of Related Interest

Book excerpt: This book will cover recent advances in genetics and molecular biology of cerebrovascular diseases, including ischemic stroke, brain arteriovenous malformation, brain aneurysms, and cavernous malformation. Developments in diagnostics, imaging and treatment will also be discussed.Much progress has been made in recent years in these fields, but not been summarized in one comprehensive text. This volume fills the gap in the literature by compiling them in one convenient, handy volume for neuroscience researchers and medical professionals.

Book Synopsis Stroke Genetics by : Hugh S. Markus

Download or read book Stroke Genetics written by Hugh S. Markus. This book was released on 2003. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stroke is a major cause of death and the major cause of adult neurological disability in most of the world. Despite its importance on a population basis, research into the genetics of stroke has lagged behind that of many other disorders. However, the situation is now changing. Anincreasing number of single gene disorders causing stroke are being described, and there is growing evidence that polygenic factors are important in the risk of apparently "sporadic" stroke.Stroke Genetics provides an up-to-date review of the area, suitable for clinicians treating stroke patients, and both clinical and non-clinical researchers in the field of cerebrovascular disease. The full range of monogenic stroke disorders causing cerebrovascular disease, including ischaemicstroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, are covered. For each, clinical features, diagnosis, and genetics are described. Increasing evidence suggest that genetic factors are also important for the much more common multifactorial stroke; this evidence isreviewed along with the results of genetic studies in this area. Optimal and novel strategies for investigating multifactorial stroke, including the use of intermediate phenotypes such as intima-media thickness and MRI detected small vessel disease are reviewed. The book concludes by describing apractical approach to investigating patients with stroke for underlying genetic disorders. Also included is a list of useful websites.

Book Synopsis Risk Factors for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke by : Sudha Seshadri

Download or read book Risk Factors for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke written by Sudha Seshadri. This book was released on 2016-03-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk Factors for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke address the relationship of a wide variety of vascular risk factors in the spectrum of cerebrovascular diseases. An international group of professionals the forefront of research and education, provide their expertise about environmental and genetic determinants for cerebrovascular disease and stroke. The authors aim to provide information on developments of genetic, environmental and lifestyle-related risk factors of various subtypes of stroke, and MRI-markers of cerebrovascular disease. One in two men, and one in three women after the age of 40, will develop a stroke in their lifetime. The burden of cerebrovascular disease extends far beyond that of acute clinical events such as stroke, with "covert" vascular injury on brain MRI being highly prevalent in older community-dwelling persons. Therefore, improving our understanding of the risk factors for stroke and cerebrovascular disease is of paramount importance for improving prevention strategies. Secular trends in stroke epidemiology, risk factors, and intermediate markers (including carotid ultrasound, brain MRI and circulating biomarkers) are presented. Cutting edge information on genetic, environmental and lifestyle-related risk factors of various subtypes of stroke and MRI-markers of cerebrovascular diseases are displayed. This important book is an essential reference to physicians interested in more effective primary prevention of stroke.
