Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Urban and Regional Planning, grade: 65.00, University of Twente , language: English, abstract: Focusing on Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area (GKMA), the fastest growing metropolitan area in Ghana, this study aims to understand the spatio-temporal dynamics of GKMA’s growth, the factors driving this process and to quantify their relative contributions. First, growth patterns during the periods 1986-2001 and 2001-2014 in were analysed. Spatial metrics were used to deepen the understanding of the patterns of growth. This revealed that of the three growth types identified in both periods, edge-expansion was predominant in both cases. Analyses of the driving forces of GKMA’s growth was done using Spatial Logistic Regression modelling approach. A review of literature coupled with consultations with experts during fieldwork assisted in identifying locally relevant driving forces of the area’s growth. Two models were constructed on basis of the identified drivers for the periods 1986-2001 and 2001-2014. The performance of both models was evaluated and validated to identify the one that best simulates GKMA’s growth. The estimated coefficients and associated odds ratio of the models were used in assessing the individual contributions of the driving forces. The results from the analysis showed that distance to urban cluster, distance to CBD, distance to major roads and the proportion of urban cells in 7x7 neighbourhood which are common to both time periods were among the top four drivers of urban growth in both periods though with varying levels of influence. Population density was identified as the most important driver of growth during 2001-2014. Finally, predictions of future growth were made based on the 2001-2014 model. The results of the model’s prediction mimic past trends of the area’s growth. This is because predicted growth is shown to mimic the layout of major roads as observed in reality. The study also simulated future growth based on proposed public investment on new roads so as to understand how this will influence future growth. The results from the predicted scenario showed new growth occurring which were however not associated with the updated factor. This study attributed the decline in influence of the updated factor to correlation among the variables. Overall the results of the study shows that the integration of remote sensing, GIS, spatial metrics and logistic regression provide a powerful collection of tools for understanding the spatio-temporal dynamics of urban growth.

Book excerpt: A Coming of Age: Geospatial Analysis and Modelling in the Early Twenty First Century Forty years ago when spatial analysis first emerged as a distinct theme within geography’s quantitative revolution, the focus was largely on consistent methods for measuring spatial correlation. The concept of spatial au- correlation took pride of place, mirroring concerns in time-series analysis about similar kinds of dependence known to distort the standard probability theory used to derive appropriate statistics. Early applications of spatial correlation tended to reflect geographical patterns expressed as points. The perspective taken on such analytical thinking was founded on induction, the search for pattern in data with a view to suggesting appropriate hypotheses which could subsequently be tested. In parallel but using very different techniques came the development of a more deductive style of analysis based on modelling and thence simulation. Here the focus was on translating prior theory into forms for generating testable predictions whose outcomes could be compared with observations about some system or phenomenon of interest. In the intervening years, spatial analysis has broadened to embrace both inductive and deductive approaches, often combining both in different mixes for the variety of problems to which it is now applied.

Book excerpt: This dissertation aims at examining sprawled urban growth patterns over time by devising a quantitative measure in a spatial statistical framework. Urban sprawl is recognized as an urban form in which negative impacts of separated land uses occur in the economy, society, and environment, owing to the spatial structure of inducing excessive automobile use. As an alternative land use practice against sprawl, the smart growth (or new urbanism) paradigm has emerged over the last decade. One of the key components of this new direction is the promotion of land use mix through which automobile uses for daily movement can be considerably reduced. In this study, a separated land use pattern is highlighted to draw a typical image of sprawled urban growth processes countering mixed land use patterns. Recently, the importance of devising quantitative measures that capture the spatial pattern change of urban sprawl over time has been emphasized in association with providing objective bases for formulating urban land use policies. Consequently, many quantitative measures in this regard have been propounded. This study proposes a methodological framework in which the spatial pattern change of separated land uses can be investigated. Since the key premise for this study is the complex nature of land use decisions over some locations and times due to many unpredictable factors, the formulation of methodology is built on the framework of spatial statistics that would properly reflect the spatially stochastic process of sprawled urban land uses. The methodological framework consists of three related components: (1) the formulation of a separation index (SI), (2) the continuous investigation of land use separation by simply plotting a series of SI s for some periods, and (3) the visual exploration of a local counterpart of the separation index in an exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) scheme. The implementation of the framework is integrated in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to provide an auxiliary, exploratory tool for drafting associated land use policy strategies. The framework is demonstrated using empirical data for Erie County for 1899-1995. Keywords .
