Book excerpt: In Revisiting Aspect and Aktionsart, Francis G.H. Pang employs a corpus approach to analyze the relationship between Greek aspect and Aktionsart. Recent works have tried to predict the meanings that emerge when a certain set of clausal factors and lexical features combine with one of the grammatical aspects. Most of these works rely heavily on Zeno Vendler's telicity distinction. Based on empirical evidence, Pang argues that telicity and perfectivity are not related in a systematic manner in Koine Greek. As a corollary, Aktionsart should be considered an interpretive category, meaning that its different values emerge, not from the interaction of only one or two linguistic parameters, but from the process of interpreting language in context.

Book Synopsis Aktionsart and its Interplay with Voice by : Tobias Rösch

Download or read book Aktionsart and its Interplay with Voice written by Tobias Rösch. This book was released on 2009-11-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Freiburg, language: English, abstract: The present paper is concerned with the interfaces between the verbal categories of aktionsart and voice. Despite the fact that aktionsarten have been known since antiquity, there still seems to be a certain amount of both terminological and conceptual confusion with respect to aktionsarten. A general definition most linguists can agree on involves the notion that aktionsart (which in most publications is referred to as lexical aspect) basically represents an immanent property of the verb assigning temporal information to a given lexical item. Lexical aspect differs from grammatical aspect in that it is restricted to verb semantics; neither does it include subdivisions based on conjugated forms of a verb, nor does it take into account the syntactico-semantic processes found on the sentential level.

Book excerpt: For the past 25 years, debate regarding the nature of tense and aspect in the Koine Greek verb has held New Testament studies at an impasse. The Greek Verb Revisited examines recent developments from the field of linguistics, which may dramatically shift the direction of this discussion. Readers will find an accessible introduction to the foundational issues, and more importantly, they will discover a way forward through the debate. Originally presented during a conference on the Greek verb supported by and held at Tyndale House and sponsored by the Faculty of Divinity of Cambridge University, the papers included in this collection represent the culmination of scholarly collaboration. The outcome is a practical and accessible overview of the Greek verb that moves beyond the current impasse by taking into account the latest scholarship from the fields of linguistics, Classics, and New Testament studies.

Book Synopsis The Intertextuality of Paul’s Apocalyptic Discourse by : Doosuk Kim

Download or read book The Intertextuality of Paul’s Apocalyptic Discourse written by Doosuk Kim. This book was released on 2023-05-08. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to investigate two strands in a single work: ‘apocalyptic Paul’ and ‘intertextuality’. First, what does ‘apocalyptic Paul’ mean? Is it synonymous to eschatology as a theological notion, or the end-time mystery? Many seminal works have delved into the intriguing yet unorganized notion of the ‘apocalyptic’. Instead of attempting to provide a universal definition of the ‘apocalyptic’, the author presents his understanding of the phenomenon, particularly in the cultural realm. The author contends that ‘apocalyptic’ is neither all about the end-time event nor merely a literary genre, but an interpretive lens to understand the world and social phenomena—one that is shaped and developed through culture and society. Accordingly, the term ‘apocalyptic Paul’ implies how Paul views and understands the world, history, and supernatural phenomena through interaction with his cultural texts and context. Second, the author also suggests that ‘intertextuality’ is not only about comparative literature study. Rather, intertextuality refers to cultural semiotics: a sign system to deliver the meaning of text. Based on this notion of intertextuality, the author interprets how Paul envisages multiple phenomena (heavenly ascent, resurrection, afterlife, the origins of sin, and two ages) within his cultural context.
