Book Synopsis Aktionsart and its Interplay with Voice by : Tobias Rösch

Download or read book Aktionsart and its Interplay with Voice written by Tobias Rösch. This book was released on 2009-11-17. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Freiburg, language: English, abstract: The present paper is concerned with the interfaces between the verbal categories of aktionsart and voice. Despite the fact that aktionsarten have been known since antiquity, there still seems to be a certain amount of both terminological and conceptual confusion with respect to aktionsarten. A general definition most linguists can agree on involves the notion that aktionsart (which in most publications is referred to as lexical aspect) basically represents an immanent property of the verb assigning temporal information to a given lexical item. Lexical aspect differs from grammatical aspect in that it is restricted to verb semantics; neither does it include subdivisions based on conjugated forms of a verb, nor does it take into account the syntactico-semantic processes found on the sentential level.

Book Synopsis Voice by : Barbara A. Fox

Download or read book Voice written by Barbara A. Fox. This book was released on 1994-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume's central concern is grammatical voice, traditionally known as diathesis, and its classical manifestations as Active, Middle, and Passive. While numerous problems in the meaning, syntax, and morphology of these categories in Indo-European remain unsolved, their counterparts in more exotic languages have raised still further questions. What discourse functions and diachronic events unite 'voice' as a recognizable phenomenon across languages? How are they typically grammaticalized? What stages do children go through in learning them? How does 'voice' link up with ergativity and with other categories and constructions such as the Inverse and the Antipassive? The authors in this volume have different perspectives on these problems: they discuss voice, e.g., from a typological-universal view, in relation to language acquisition and to ergativity, and from diachronic and cross-linguistic perspectives.

Book Synopsis Investigations of the Syntax–Semantics–Pragmatics Interface by : Robert D. Van Valin, Jr.

Download or read book Investigations of the Syntax–Semantics–Pragmatics Interface written by Robert D. Van Valin, Jr.. This book was released on 2008-11-21. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations of the Syntax-Semantics-Pragmatics Interface presents on-going research in Role and Reference Grammar in a number of critical areas of linguistic theory: verb semantics and argument structure, the nature of syntactic categories and syntactic representation, prosody and syntax, information structure and syntax, and the syntax and semantics of complex sentences. In each of these areas there are important results which not only advance the development of the theory, but also contribute to the broader theoretical discussion. In particular, there are analyses of grammatical phenomena such as transitivity in Kabardian, the verb-less numeral quantifier construction in Japanese, and an unusual kind of complex sentence in Wari’ (Chapakuran, Brazil) which not only illustrate the descriptive and explanatory power of the theory, but also present interesting challenges to other approaches. In addition, there are papers looking at the implications and applications of Role and Reference Grammar for neurolinguistic research, parsing and automated text analysis.

Book Synopsis Modality and its Interaction with the Verbal System by : Sjef Barbiers

Download or read book Modality and its Interaction with the Verbal System written by Sjef Barbiers. This book was released on 2002-05-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a broad overview of the issues relevant for the study of syntax of modals and their interaction with the verbal system. A large number of novel observations are offered from a variety of languages, including Dutch, (Modern and Middle) English, German, Lele, Macedonian, Middle Dutch and Slovene. The wealth of data, the critical evaluation of existing syntactic analyses of modality and the alternative analyses proposed make the book interesting for both for descriptively and for theoretically oriented syntacticians. Major concerns addressed are: the distinction between epistemic and root modality (where the arguments pro and contra the assumption of a corresponding difference in syntactic structure are evaluated, refined, and supplemented by arguments for syntactic distinction between necessity and possibility modals and by consideration of the influence of the modal’s complement on the interpretation), the interaction between modality and clausal phenomena (in particular negation, but also imperatives, aspect and Aktionsart), and the acquisition of modality (addressing cross-linguistic differences in the possibility for root infinitives to express modal interpretations and the late acquisition of epistemic interpretations as compared with non-epistemic interpretations).

Book Synopsis Tense and Aspect in Second Language Acquisition and Learner Corpus Research by : Robert Fuchs

Download or read book Tense and Aspect in Second Language Acquisition and Learner Corpus Research written by Robert Fuchs. This book was released on 2020-06-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expression of temporal relations, notably through tense and aspect, is central in all processes of communication, but commonly perceived and described as a major hurdle for non-native speakers. While this topic has already received considerable attention in the SLA literature, it features less prominently in recent corpus-based studies of learner language. This volume intends to close this gap. It shows which additional insights into the area of tense and aspect in learner language can be gained using corpus data, addressing the following questions: In which ways do corpus-based studies complement work based on other methods?; How can a corpus-based approach inform theories on the acquisition of tense and aspect specifically, and of language acquisition in general?; Are results language-specific or can universal principles be established?; How pervasive are effects of mode/register within learner corpus data?; What role does native and non-native input play?; Which methodological challenges come to the fore when using corpus data instead of elicited data?; How can the notion of “target(-like)” performance be operationalized for corpus material?; Which implications do the findings from the learner corpora have for the teaching and learning of the target language? Originally published as special issue of International Journal of Learner Corpus Research 4:2 (2018)
