Book excerpt: Persuasion, in its various linguistic forms, enters our lives daily. Politicians and the news media attempt to change or confirm our beliefs, while advertisers try to bend our tastes toward buying their products. Persuasion goes on in courtrooms, universities, and the business world. Persuasion pervades interpersonal relations in all social spheres, public and private. And persuasion reaches us via a large number of genres and their intricate interplay. This volume brings together nine chapters which investigate some of the typical genres of modern persuasion. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, the authors explore the linguistic features of successful (and unsuccessful) persuasion and the reasons for the variation of persuasive choices as realized in various genres: business negotiations, judicial argumentation, political speech, advertising, newspaper editorials, and news writing. In the final chapter, the editors tie together the two themes — persuasion and genres — by proposing an Intergenre Model. This model assumes that a powerful force behind generic evolution is the perennial need for implicit persuasion.

Book Synopsis Persuasive Genres by : S. Surinder Kathpalia

Download or read book Persuasive Genres written by S. Surinder Kathpalia. This book was released on 2021-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book provides an analysis of persuasive genres in the domain of media, ranging from traditional to new media genres on the Internet. Kathpalia provides a layered analysis of a family of persuasive genres at the functional, semantic and linguistic levels and a reconceptualization of genres as empowering rather than constraining, enabling rather than binding, and dynamic rather than static. The book leads readers to an understanding of genre that accounts for the way we interpret, respond to and create genres in different settings whilst shedding light on how genres change and how they evolve into new and unique forms to meet the ever-changing needs of society. This book would be of interest to those studying or researching the topic of genres, and those interested in re-conceptualising the way in which we interpret and understand genres from linguistic and discourse perspectives"--

Book Synopsis Persuasion in Self-improvement Books by : Jeremy Koay

Download or read book Persuasion in Self-improvement Books written by Jeremy Koay. This book was released on 2019-02-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how persuasion relates to values in self-improvement literature, revealing the discursive practices used to persuade and engage their readers, and construct a credible persona. The author adopts a corpus-driven approach that encompasses an examination of genre analysis and linguistic features such as narrative, pronoun, grammar and structure. The book further draws on insights from original interviews with writers and readers of self-improvement books, as well as people who do not read the genre. It begins by providing a helpful overview of the concepts of ideology and genre. A brief history of self-improvement books and their values and assumptions provide the context for the analysis. Where relevant, linguistic features in self-improvement books are compared with other genres (e.g. academic text, conversation, news). This book will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of linguistics, culture and media studies.

Book Synopsis The Pragmatics of Intercultural and International Communication by : Jan Blommaert

Download or read book The Pragmatics of Intercultural and International Communication written by Jan Blommaert. This book was released on 1991-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of papers from a special session of the International Pragmatics Conference (Antwerp, August 1987) and from the Symposium on Intercultural Communication (Ghent, December 1987). Studying the communicative styles of cultures and social groups, both at the descriptive level and at the level of pragmatic theory construction, should be a target of pragmatics as a discipline. A clear view is needed of the restrictions on adaptability involving potential fields of conflict in intercultural and international communication. As the contributions to this volume demonstrate, very little should be taken for granted in this respect.
