Book excerpt: What family forms are recognised in established Nordic and welfare policies? Which family values and parental models should be given political priority in a multi-ethnical society? Would part-time leave be ideal from a gender equality perspective? These were some of the questions raised at the conference 'Parental Leave, Care Policies & Gender Equalities in the Nordic Countries' in Reykjavik on 22 October 2009. The conference was arranged by the Centre of Gender Equality in Iceland on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Security during the Icelandic presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers. Researchers presented their preliminary results, compared the differences between the Nordic countries and discussed how we reach the goal of a gender-equality, friendly welfare state with reconciliation between personal and professional life where we serve the needs of men, women and children. The report contains notes from the conference, speeches, workshop discussions and links to PowerPoint presentations.

Book excerpt: This paper looks into the legislative proposal of Papa Monats addressed by female Minister Hartinger-Klein and portrays the draft law analysis. During this process the legal foundations in Austria are explained as well as the new EU guidelines. Furthermore a comparison with other EU countries is made and the current debate in Austria is described. Finally we analysed the hypothesis, that an introduction of Papa Monats wouldn`t evoke any change in the participation of fathers, if no other policies are installed.

Book Synopsis The Gender Wage Gap: How Paid Family Leave Affects Women of Childbearing Age by : Flannery Geoghegan

Download or read book The Gender Wage Gap: How Paid Family Leave Affects Women of Childbearing Age written by Flannery Geoghegan. This book was released on 2018. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the effects of paid family leave on the gender wage gap for women of childbearing age. The historical background of the matter in the United States and abroad, along with prior research provide context for the importance of the family-focused policy analysis. Using a difference-in-difference-in-difference model, and in line with previous results, parental leave for women in treatment states increases their future earnings, as compared to men, only slightly. The results of the study indicate increases in wags due to paid family leave programming, while gender, race and occupation variables have negative impacts. Based on the findings, suggestions on ways to better target the gender wage disparity, either directly through a federal paid leave program and female labor force compensation or indirectly by addressing paternal leave taking patterns and improving educational outcomes are included in the study.
