Book Synopsis Africa and the Formation of the New System of International Relations by : Alexey M. Vasiliev

Download or read book Africa and the Formation of the New System of International Relations written by Alexey M. Vasiliev. This book was released on 2021-09-16. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the prospects for the development of the African continent as part of the emerging system of international relations in the twenty-first century. African countries are playing an increasingly important part in the current system of international relations. Nevertheless, even 60 years after gaining their independence, most of them are confronted with regional and global issues that are directly related to their colonial past and its influence. Due to Africa’s wealth of natural and geopolitical resources, the possibility of interference in the internal affairs of African countries on the part of new and traditional global actors remains very real. Leading Africanists, together with international scholars from both international relations and African studies, examine the experience of decolonization, the impact of the emergence of a unipolar world on the African continent, and the growing influence of new international actors on the African continent in the twenty-first century. In addition, the importance of African countries’ foreign policy concepts and ideological attitudes in the post-bipolar period is revealed. “This volume strengthens the intellectual bridge between Russian, African and Western scholars of international relations. Strongly recommended!” Vladimir G. Shubin, Institute for African Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences “This book presents a wide range of prominent global scholars who bring a wealth of knowledge on the subject of Africa and the world.” Gilbert Khadiagala, Jan Smuts Professor of International Relations and Director of the African Centre for the Study of the USA (ACSUS) at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. “As a genuine contribution to the field of international relations and Global South Agency, this book should be in every institution of higher education’s library.” Lembe Tiky, Director of Academic Development, International Studies Association.

Book Synopsis Pastoralist-Farmer Conflicts in Nigeria by : Adeola Aderayo Adebajo

Download or read book Pastoralist-Farmer Conflicts in Nigeria written by Adeola Aderayo Adebajo. This book was released on 2022-09-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth analysis of one of the most persistent and perennial types of conflict in Africa– pastoralist-farmer conflicts – and the linkages with conflict management and resolution, vulnerability and displacement, government capacity and deficits, and the role of local and international governmental and non-governmental agencies in the specific Nigerian context. Conflict-induced displacement generates humanitarian and protection issues particularly when the government is unwilling to carry out its responsibility of protecting the civilians in flight. The book fills the intellectual vacuum created on the implications the conflict management mechanisms adopted in resolving pastoralist-farmer conflict have on the protection of internally displaced persons (IDPs). It extensively describes the displacement and associated risks and vulnerabilities of IDPs arising from the conflict and the efforts of the different stakeholders in responding to the protection issues. It examines various conflict management mechanisms adopted by stakeholders in resolving pastoralist-farmer conflict and how they have affected the protection of IDPs. It also elucidates the imperativeness of internally displaced persons’ involvement in the management/resolution processes of pastoralist-farmer conflict, which will not only impact the resolution of the conflict but also provide opportunity for their issues of protection to be addressed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2023 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: A+, National Open University of Nigeria (National Open University of Nigeria), course: Peace Studies and Conflicts Resolutions, language: English, abstract: The paper investigates the issue of farmers-herders' conflicts and their profound impacts on food security in Benue State, Nigeria. This research employs the qualitative research method, using indepth oral interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) as tools for data collection. Through an extensive examination of the conflict's causes, effects, and potential mitigation strategies, this study offers a comprehensive understanding of this complex challenge. It finds that the causes of these conflicts are diverse, ranging from illegal encroachments into farmlands, climate change, population growth, and inadequacies in government policies. These root causes have far-reaching implications for food security in the region. The effects of farmers-herders' conflicts on food security are dire. Loss of human lives, mass displacement, land degradation, and increased hunger have been identified as the significant consequences. These effects compound an already fragile food security situation in Benue State, rendering it a matter of critical concern. In response to these challenges, this research proposes a multifaceted approach to mitigate the conflict's impact on food security. This includes enlightenment campaigns for value reorientation, the replacement of offensive terms and policies, the formation of open public forums for discussions, the avoidance of hate speeches, and the implementation of an effective land distribution approach. These strategies are aimed at fostering unity and understanding between farmers and herders, leading to sustainable peace and ultimately enhancing food security in Benue State.
