Book Synopsis Gender differences in vocabulary adquisition in the foreign language in primary education by : María Pilar Agustín Llach

Download or read book Gender differences in vocabulary adquisition in the foreign language in primary education written by María Pilar Agustín Llach. This book was released on 2009-05-18. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work deals with the examination of gender differences in lexical error production in foreign language writing. Differences were explored both from a quantitative perspective and also from a qualitative one. Existing literature on gender differences in the processes of foreign language acquisition has focused on differences in reading comprehension, learning strategies, or vocabulary use, but the field of lexical errors has only been addressed scarcely, especially in primary education contexts. Moreover, these studies throw inconclusive and contradictory results. We found that male and female students commit similar percentages of lexical errors in their writings, so that their compositions had similar degrees of lexical accuracy ratio. Likewise, from a qualitative point of view, our results show lack of significant differences in the type of lexical errors produced by girls and boys. From our results we can conclude that male and female foreign language learners follow similar paths of vocabulary acquisition, at least at the early stages of this process are concerned.

Book Synopsis Post-admission Language Assessment of University Students by : John Read

Download or read book Post-admission Language Assessment of University Students written by John Read. This book was released on 2016-08-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English-medium universities around the world face real challenges in ensuring that incoming students have the language and literacy skills they need to cope with the demands of their degree programmes. One response has been a variety of institutional initiatives to assess students after admission, in order to identify those with significant needs and advise them on how to enhance their academic language ability. This volume brings together papers from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Oman, South Africa and the United States, written by language assessment specialists who discuss issues in the design and implementation of these post-admission assessments in their own institutions. A major theme running through the book is the need to evaluate the validity of such assessments not just on their technical quality but on their impact, in terms of giving students access to effective means of developing their language skills and ultimately enhancing their academic achievement.

Book Synopsis Lexical Availability in English and Spanish as a Second Language by : Rosa María Jiménez Catalán

Download or read book Lexical Availability in English and Spanish as a Second Language written by Rosa María Jiménez Catalán. This book was released on 2013-09-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contributes to the research in two different research areas: lexical availability studies and vocabulary research in second or foreign languages. Lexical availability is defined as the words that immediately come to mind as a response to a stimulus provided by topics related to domains closely connected to daily life: for instance animals, food and drink, daily activities, politics, or poverty. Lexical availability is a dimension of learners’ receptive and productive lexical competence, and, consequently, an important variable of learners’ communicative competence. Written by leading researchers in Spanish and English applied linguistics, the studies presented in this volume offer the reader findings and insights from studies conducted in learners with different mother tongues, who learn English or Spanish as their second or third language. “This book made me aware of an approach to vocabulary acquisition which has a long tradition in European research, but has been somewhat neglected by English-speaking researchers. The methodology was pioneered in France where it developed into the Francais Fondamental project - an influential approach to the vocabulary needs of learners of French. It was also taken up by Spanish researchers, and more recently developed by the team at La Rioja University. Where English-language research has focused on the frequency of words in large corpora and the implications of this feature for L2 vocabulary acquisition, the lexical availability tradition takes a much more learner-centred approach to L2 vocabulary skills, directly reflecting learners' needs and learners' ability to do things with small, effective vocabularies. This leads to a set of research priorities that look refreshingly different from the ones we are used to. Read this book. It might change the way you think about vocabulary research.” Paul Meara, Swansea University, Wales, UK
