Book Synopsis Exploring the Professional Identity of Management Consultants by : Anthony F. Buono

Download or read book Exploring the Professional Identity of Management Consultants written by Anthony F. Buono. This book was released on 2013-03-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is based on the presentations and discussions from the Fifth European Conference on Management Consulting sponsored by the Management Consulting Division of the Academy of Management, which took place June, 2011 at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The conference theme – Exploring the Professional Identity of Management Consultants – attempted to capture the highly ambiguous social status of this young and emerging profession. Management consulting does not have professional standards or accreditation criteria like those found in medicine or law, there are low barriers to entry, and a broad range of tasks are undertaken in the name of consulting. As a result, a crucial aspect of what constitutes such a loosely defined profession is the identity of its members. The professional identity of management consultants is continuously developing through the interplay of how consultants are seen and valued by clients as well as in the larger society, and how consultancy firms and consultants identify and position themselves. This theme includes a variety of topics, ranging from the interaction between consultants and their clients, consultant rhetoric and self-presentation, and the plethora of books, media and public discourse on consulting, to human resource policies and practices, knowledge development activities of consultancy firms, career and life stories of consultants and consultancies, and consulting associations, accreditation bodies, and education programs. All of these factors contribute, either directly or indirectly, to identity construction in the field of management consulting.

Book Synopsis Culture and Professional Identity in Global Management Consulting by : Suet Fan McConnellogue

Download or read book Culture and Professional Identity in Global Management Consulting written by Suet Fan McConnellogue. This book was released on 2013. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis aims to explore the interplay between culture and professional identity in global management consulting with a focus on the power relations and conflicts. A number of research gaps are identified in existing literature from different domains in association with the strategic and structural implications of globalisation for the management consulting field; culture in management consulting; formation of professional identities in management consulting; and identity, capital formation and career in management consulting. Accordingly, four research questions are set for the purpose of addressing the identified research gaps. Bourdieu's notion of field, habitus and capital is adopted as the core theory to study the management consulting field in terms of culture and professional identity by linking the field, firm and individual levels relationally and holistically. I also draw on the writings of other influential theories, notably Giddens' structuration theory, DiMaggio's neo-institutionalism and Scot's concept of power relationships to complement Bourdieu's theories in relation to culture and professional identity. This research contains two elements - quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative element is founded upon comparative case studies on six leading global management consulting firms with supplement of practice related data source. The qualitative element is built upon in-depth semi-structured interviews with consulting professionals at different levels in the management consulting field. An empirical analysis is conducted in order to obtain a comprehensive illumination and comparison of management consultants' live experience of, and insights on, the interrelationship of culture and professional identity in global management consulting. This research presents a number of novel findings which have theoretical and empirical contributions to enrich our understanding of different areas of management consulting. This research contributes to the systematic analysis of the intellectual field that was not completed by Bourdieu. It also enriches the volume of organisation studies literature in relational approaches particularly in management consulting settings and encourages further research of the same kind.

Book Synopsis Your Leadership Role and Professional Identity: The Contributions of Transactional Analysis, Systems Theory, Group Relations and Einstein by : Klaas Kunst

Download or read book Your Leadership Role and Professional Identity: The Contributions of Transactional Analysis, Systems Theory, Group Relations and Einstein written by Klaas Kunst. This book was released on 2019-09-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the English translated edition of the very successful Dutch management book Einstein and the Art of Sailing - A New Perspective On The Art Of Leadership. This English version has been retitled Your Leadership Role and Professional Identity, to better reflect its content. Written for and used by managers who want to explore their way of working. The question for them may be: How can I be more effective and more efficient at my job in such a way that it brings (more) joy to the workplace? Anne de Graaf and Klaas Kunst wrote this book for managers who want to achieve this without calling on their hierarchical position or personal power all the time. Managers who are not in a hierarchical position in their company can therefore also benefit from using this book. The book invites potential users to browse through its pages, looking for that piece of information, that story, those questions or even for a particular illustration that speaks to them regarding an issue they want to explore. This book is organised and indexed as a quick reference guide and therefore should be used, not (only) read! Written by two trainers/consultants who worked for BMC, the largest consultancy company in the Netherlands, the authors are driven by the mission to improve the public sector. Anne de Graaf and Klaas Kunst both worked for years in that sector of Dutch society and also as managers. They know all about the possibilities and pitfalls managers and their staff encounter working for the public cause. The book was therefore written with the citizen, the patient and the student in mind. Improving the public sector is not a goal in itself nor is teaching and training managers. It is the citizens of a city, the patients of a health care institute and the students of an educational organisation that should gain from it! This book in Dutch was also bought by hundreds of managers from the private sector who were intrigued by the original and practical way the material is presented.

Book excerpt: The 4th Industrial Revolution is well underway. Our lives are changing at an exponential rate, resulting in a multi-faceted, deeply interconnected world. The digital revolution is integrating multiple technologies, which is leading to unprecedented paradigm shifts in the economy, management, and society. Entire systems across countries, industries, and societies are being transformed, triggering a transformation that is unlike anything humankind has ever experienced. Given the confluence of dramatic changes in organizational life, triggering emerging technology breakthroughs such as robotics, the internet of things, biotechnology, materials science, data science and big data, and quantum computing, this volume of the Research in Management Consulting series explores how the research and practice of management consulting is unfolding in a new era of profound shifts in the way researchers and consultants sense, think, and act. The authors of this volume bring both to scholars and practitioners the latest discussions of efforts to understand consulting in organizations amplified by the fusion of technologies across physical, digital, and biological worlds. They also bring to light a movement from human supervised artificial intelligence systems to fully autonomous artificial intelligence systems that have the potential to demonstrate intelligence beyond uman capabilities.
