Book excerpt: We report a systematic study of both quantum and classical geometrically frustrated Ising models with competing ordering mechanism. The ordering comes in the classical case from a coupling of two-dimensional (2D) layers and in the quantum model from the quantum dynamics induced by a transverse field. We develop a microscopic derivation of the Landau- inzburg- ilson (LGW) Hamiltonian for these models and show that it can be interpreted as the free energy of three-dimensional (3D) elastic non-crossing strings. By utilizing this effective Hamiltonian, the entire transverse field versus temperature phase diagram for the 2D quantum Ising model is obtained analytically, including the universality classes of both the quantum and the finite temperature transitions. The structures of the ordered phases in both 3D classical and 2D quantum Ising models are obtained from a detailed entropy argument. The results are in excellent agreement with recent numerical simulations.

Book excerpt: Quite remarkably, the low-energy behavior of most metals is well captured by effectively ignoring the Coulomb repulsion between the constituent electrons. Yet over the past several decades many examples of "strongly correlated systems" have been discovered for which a strong interplay between interactions and quantum mechanics leads rather to spectacular deviations from an independent-electron picture, as exemplified by quantum Hall systems, high-Tc superconductors, heavy fermion compounds, etc. This thesis is concerned with exploring exotic physics that can emerge in a class of correlated systems known as quantum magnets, where electrons "self-localize" around crystal lattice sites due to interactions, leaving residual spin couplings at low energies. Typically the ground states of such systems exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking, commonly in the form of magnetic order. But sufficiently strong quantum fluctuations can suppress symmetry-breaking order even down to zero temperature, generating exotic "spin liquid" phases that exhibit novel features such as electron fractionalization, topological order, emergent symmetries, etc.

Book excerpt: Frustration, induced by competition between different interactions, can be realized on a diamond lattice, especially in A-site of spinel materials with a chemical formula AB2X4. We address the realization of classical spin liquid and provide a unified theoretical explanation of various phenomena observed in spinel materials. Motivated by CoNb2O6, we study interplay between quantum criticality and geometric frustration. In the presence of carefully oriented magnetic field, the system realizes quantum phase transition of transverse field quantum Ising model while magnetic frustration exists due to the lattice geometry at the same time. We reveal several quantum magnetic phases and crossovers between one dimensional quantum criticality and several three dimensional quantum critical points. Lastly, we look for the possible realization of a quantum spin liquid focusing on A-site magnets in rare-earth pyrochlores. Based on a pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian, we discuss how quantum fluctuations lead the exotic phases such as a U(1) quantum spin liquid and XY ordered phases, beyond classical spin ice state.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Frustrated Magnetism by : Claudine Lacroix

Download or read book Introduction to Frustrated Magnetism written by Claudine Lacroix. This book was released on 2011-01-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of highly frustrated magnetism has developed considerably and expanded over the last 15 years. Issuing from canonical geometric frustration of interactions, it now extends over other aspects with many degrees of freedom such as magneto-elastic couplings, orbital degrees of freedom, dilution effects, and electron doping. Its is thus shown here that the concept of frustration impacts on many other fields in physics than magnetism. This book represents a state-of-the-art review aimed at a broad audience with tutorial chapters and more topical ones, encompassing solid-state chemistry, experimental and theoretical physics.
