Book excerpt: Frustration, induced by competition between different interactions, can be realized on a diamond lattice, especially in A-site of spinel materials with a chemical formula AB2X4. We address the realization of classical spin liquid and provide a unified theoretical explanation of various phenomena observed in spinel materials. Motivated by CoNb2O6, we study interplay between quantum criticality and geometric frustration. In the presence of carefully oriented magnetic field, the system realizes quantum phase transition of transverse field quantum Ising model while magnetic frustration exists due to the lattice geometry at the same time. We reveal several quantum magnetic phases and crossovers between one dimensional quantum criticality and several three dimensional quantum critical points. Lastly, we look for the possible realization of a quantum spin liquid focusing on A-site magnets in rare-earth pyrochlores. Based on a pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian, we discuss how quantum fluctuations lead the exotic phases such as a U(1) quantum spin liquid and XY ordered phases, beyond classical spin ice state.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we study the effect of quantum fluctuations on the half-polarized magnetization plateau of a pyrochlore antiferromagnet. We argue that an expansion around the easy axis limit is appropriate for discussing the ground state selection amongst the classically degenerate manifold of collinear states with a 3:1 ratio of spins parallel/anti-parallel to the magnetization axis. A general approach to the necessary degenerate perturbation theory is presented, and an effective quantum dimer model within this degenerate manifold is derived for arbitrary spin s. We show that under rather general conditions, the first non-constant terms in the effective Hamiltonian for s & ge; 1 occur only at sixth order in the transverse exchange coupling. For s & ge; 5/2, the dominant terms in the effective Hamiltonian are those of a classical dimer model, which predicts a magnetically ordered state. For s & le; 2, more exotic possibilities may be realized. The effective dimer Hamiltonian then is strongly quantum. We describe 2 likely ground states in that regime--one a U(1) spin liquid phase, and the other a magnetically ordered state.
