Book Synopsis An Idaho Postsecondary Transition Program by : Michelle D. Doty

Download or read book An Idaho Postsecondary Transition Program written by Michelle D. Doty. This book was released on 2011. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is little information about the design of postsecondary transition programs for students with disabilities between the ages of 18 and 21. Despite this, there appear to be an increased number of these programs being moved into communities and on college campuses. Traditionally this population of students who remain eligible to receive services from public education until they reach the age of twenty-one have been school-based. Research on specific program type appears to be an area of need and one worth pursuing The programs that have been researched are based in best practices as established in transition planning. This study provides a qualitative look at how one Idaho school district serves these young adults with disabilities. Special educators, paraprofessionals, and administrators associated with this program were interviewed to share personal perspectives on the development, success, and barriers of their program. The students attending this program and their families were also interviewed to understand their personal thoughts and feelings about the program and how it affected their transition into the adult world. In addition, college and community collaborators were interviewed about their participation and commitment to the transition services being developed within in their organization or institution. Descriptive case studies were developed from the interviews, which may be used for both in-service and pre-service training purposes.
