Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soybean seed discoloration, associated with bean pod mottle virus (BPMV), has become a serious problem in production areas of the USA since the late 1990's. A series of field experiments was carried out to elucidate the epidemiology of seed infection by BPMV and develop efficacious and economic control practices. Results of the study showed that bean leaf beetles, acting as a secondary inoculum source, were more significant towards BPMV infection and seed discoloration than planting infected seed, a primary source of inoculum, although seed-borne inoculum was related to incidence of seed discoloration when bean leaf beetle populations were not controlled. BPMV was detected throughout the growing season and its incidence could be related to bean leaf beetle feeding and/or populations. The pathogen also was consistently recovered at a higher rate from discolored seeds than in apparently normal seeds after harvest. Experiments in which insect population were selectively controlled by insecticide treatments showed that transmission of the BPMV by the overwintered population or first generation of the bean leaf beetle were of more importance to soybean seed discoloration than that from the second generation. Management strategies using imidacloprid seed treatment to control the overwintered generation and insecticide sprays timed to be applied at onset of the first generation of the bean leaf beetle were shown to be potentially effective, economic management strategies for this disease until longer term solutions such as resistant cultivars are developed. In addition to reduction of seed discoloration, insecticide treatments were shown to increase yield and seed size of harvested soybeans. The study also showed that seed germination and vigor were not affected by BPMV infection.
