Download or read book World Investment Report 2024 written by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). This book was released on 2024-06-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business and investment facilitation have become central to both private sector development and FDI attraction efforts of governments in developing countries. At the core are information provision, transparency of rules and regulations, and streamlining of administrative procedures. Because these elements are information- and procedures-based, digitalization is central to effective implementation. They have thus led to a wave of digital government initiatives, including information portals and online single windows. Digital government has the potential to address many institutional challenges faced in developing countries, strengthening governance, reducing costs, improving services, and combating corruption. Because governance and institutional weaknesses are a key obstacle to attracting investment in many developing countries, digital government and the promotion of investment for sustainable development are closely intertwined.

Book Synopsis World Migration Report 2024 by : International Organization for Migration

Download or read book World Migration Report 2024 written by International Organization for Migration. This book was released on 2024-05-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2000, IOM has been producing its flagship world migration reports every two years. The World Migration Report 2024, the twelfth in the world migration report series, has been produced to contribute to increased understanding of migration and mobility throughout the world. The last two years saw major migration and displacement events that have caused great hardship and trauma, as well as loss of life. In addition to the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, millions of people have been displaced due to other conflicts, such as within and/or from the Syrian Arab Republic, Yemen, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Sudan, Ethiopia and Myanmar. There have also been large scale displacements triggered by climate- and weather-related disasters in many parts of the world in 2022 and 2023, including in Pakistan, the Philippines, China, India, Bangladesh, Brazil and Colombia. Further, in February 2023, south-east Türkiye and northern Syrian Arab Republic experienced powerful earthquakes, resulting in more than 50,000 deaths. By March, an estimated 2.7 million people had been displaced in Türkiye and many had been left homeless in the Syrian Arab Republic. This new edition presents key data and information on migration as well as thematic chapters on highly topical migration issues and is structured to focus on two key contributions for readers. Part I includes key information on migration and migrants (including migration-related statistics); and part II includes balanced, evidence-based analysis of complex and emerging migration issues.

Book Synopsis World Wildlife Crime Report 2024 by : United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime

Download or read book World Wildlife Crime Report 2024 written by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. This book was released on 2024-05-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition of UNODC’s quadrennial World Wildlife Crime Report, aims to provide a tool to assess and improve responses to this hugely damaging form of criminal activity. The present report covers trends in the illicit wildlife trade, analyses harms and impacts, probes driving factors, and takes stock of responses. Wildlife crimes are diverse and often devastating in their impact and consequences. They hamper conservation efforts, damage ecosystems, and contribute to undermining our planet’s capacity to mitigate climate change. They also infringe on the essential needs, income opportunities, and cultural rights of local communities, and corrode governance and the rule of law. Global recognition of this damage has grown steadily, and after two decades of concerted action, there is some cause for optimism. There has been tangible success against trafficking of some iconic species, while cross-border cooperation and criminalization of wildlife crime have both improved.
