Book excerpt: Since Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign in June 2015, Fascism has reared its ugly head with the predictable results of a rise in hate crimes, the murder and physical assaults on anti-Fascist activists, and a worsening political environment for religious and racial minorities in the United States. "We have been awakened," a far-right activist recently told New Yorker journalist Evan Osnos soon after Trump announced his presidential bid. We need to push them back underneath the rocks they came from. Knowing our history is vital part of the struggle to defeat them. This book is a collection of several articles on the history of Fascism and anti-Fascism in the United States in the 1930s. They came to be out of my curiosity, largely in response to growth of European Fascism especially in Greece a few years ago, and the initial response to the Trump presidential campaign. I hope they provide some historical insight into the current development of Fascism and how to fight. Of all of the major capitalist nations, they United States had one of the weakest traditions of Fascism. Has this change? We shall see.

Book Synopsis Fascism in America by : Gavriel D. Rosenfeld

Download or read book Fascism in America written by Gavriel D. Rosenfeld. This book was released on 2023-09-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has fascism arrived in America? In this pioneering book, Gavriel D. Rosenfeld and Janet Ward have gathered experts to survey the history of fascism in the United States. Although the US established a staunch anti-fascist reputation by defeating the Axis powers in World War II, the unsettling truth is that fascist ideas have long been present within American society. Since the election of Donald Trump as President in 2016, scholars have debated whether Trumpism should be seen as an outgrowth of American conservatism or of a darker - and potentially fascist - tradition. Fascism in America contributes to this debate by examining the activities of interwar right-wing groups like the Silver Shirts, the KKK, and the America First movement, as well as the post-war rise of Black antifascism and white vigilantism, the representation of American Nazis in popular culture, and policy options for combating right-wing extremism.

Book Synopsis American Fascism by : Brynn Tannehill

Download or read book American Fascism written by Brynn Tannehill. This book was released on 2021-04-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trump is out of the White House, but American democracy is on the ropes and teetering on the brink of competitive authoritarianism controlled by theocrats and oligarchs. With its cherished institutions hobbled, political norms trampled, guardrails severely damaged, and body politic divided by chasms of race and geography, can the U.S. survive another administration dedicated to establishing de facto single party rule? In this compelling, comprehensive analysis, Brynn Tannehill draws on her expertise in studying the collapse of weak democracies around the globe and her previous research in law, political science, economics and right-wing populism to explain the trajectory of how we got here and the current threats we face. Most importantly, she analyzes what the characteristics of fascism are, if they are applicable to the base of the GOP today, and what that means for us should they succeed in establishing permanent minoritarian rule. American Fascism is a surgical analysis of 250 years of struggle for democracy in America and a prescient prognosis of what’s to come if we do not heed Tannehill’s warnings and advice.
