Book Synopsis The Wildness Within by : Kenneth Brower

Download or read book The Wildness Within written by Kenneth Brower. This book was released on 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Brower, "the Archdruid," as writer John McPhee called him, shaped the modern environmental movement. He directed or founded organizations including the Sierra Club, Friends of the Earth, and the Earth Island Institute and staffed them with young activists whom he inspired with his passion for the land and whose lives he transformed by his belief in their capacity for greatness. In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Brower's birth, his son Kenneth Brower interviewed nineteen environmental leaders, disciples, and friends about his father's impact on them personally as well as on the larger community. Amid tales of how David Brower pulled them from oblivion, sometimes drank them under the table, and often set them on courses for the rest of their lives, a nuanced portrait emerges not just of a complex man but of a movement still suffused with his spirit. Book Synopsis Is Wildness Over? by : Paul Wapner

Download or read book Is Wildness Over? written by Paul Wapner. This book was released on 2020-04-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected as one of The Progressive’s ‘Favourite Books of 2020’ Wildness was once integral to our ancestors' lives as they struggled to survive in an unpredictable environment. Today, most of us live in relative stability insulated from the vicissitudes of nature. Wildness is over, right? Wrong, argues leading environmental scholar Paul Wapner. Wildness may have disappeared from our immediate lives, but it’s been catapulted up to the global level. The planet itself has gone into spasm - calving glaciers, wildfires, heatwaves, mass extinction, and rising oceans all represent the new face of wildness. Rejecting paths offered by geoengineering and de-extinction to bring the Earth under control, Wapner calls instead for ‘rewilding’. This involves relinquishing the desire for comfort at all costs and welcoming greater uncertainty into our own lives. To save ourselves from global ruin, it is time to stop sanitizing and exerting mastery over the world and begin living humbly in it.
