Book excerpt: A Caldecott Honor Book by the creators of the beloved Story of Ferdinand Wee Gillis lives in Scotland. He is an orphan, and he spends half of each year with his mother's people in the lowlands, while the other half finds him in the highlands with his father's kin. Both sides of Gillis's family are eager for him to settle down and adopt their ways. In the lowlands, he is taught to herd cattle, learning how to call them to him in even the heaviest of evening fogs. In the rocky highlands, he stalks stags from outcrop to outcrop, holding his breath so as not to make a sound. Wee Gillis is a quick study, and he soon picks up what his elders can teach him. And yet he is unprepared when the day comes for him to decide, once and for all, whether it will be the lowlands or the highlands that he will call his home. Robert Lawson and Munro Leaf's classic picture book is a tribute to the powers of the imagination and a triumph of the storyteller's and illustrator's art.

Book Synopsis Terrible, Horrible Edie by : E. C. Spykman

Download or read book Terrible, Horrible Edie written by E. C. Spykman. This book was released on 2012-12-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even if she has lived ten terrible years, terrible, horrible Edie really isn’t terrible and horrible at all, but rather one of the most charming and engaging and gutsy children in American children’s fiction. It’s true of course that Edie does get into—and not always without it being at least a little bit her fault—some pretty terrible and horrible scrapes, and that sometimes she will sulk, but these are the kinds of things that happen to the kid sister of two snooty boys and one fancy-pants girl, not to mention having to deal with the distraction of two half sisters who are no better than babies. Edie’s father and stepmother have headed to Europe for the summer, and though the rest of the family can look forward to good times at a beloved summer house on the sea, Edie still has to fight to hold her own. Adventures on a sailboat and on an island, and the advent of a major hurricane and what Edie takes to be a military coup, all come to a climax when Edie solves the mystery of who stole the neighbor’s jewels and saves, at least for one day, the day. This story of Edie and the other members of the Cares family may remind readers of Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons, except that Edie has an experimental, even anarchic streak that is all her terrible, horrible own.

Book Synopsis Paul Cushman by : Albany Institute of History and Art

Download or read book Paul Cushman written by Albany Institute of History and Art. This book was released on 2007-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life, time, and work of a renowned Albany potter comes vividly to life in these pages. Paul Cushman (1767-1833) is recognized today as one of the founders of a regional stoneware industry that stretched throughout the Upper Hudson Valley of New York State. When Cushman moved to Albany around 1800, local stoneware production was limited to a few potters. His decision to open a pottery works "half a mile west of the Albany Goal" at the beginning of the new century resulted in a long-lived and successful business. It also initiated a century of tremendous growth and expansion in regional stoneware manufacturing. The expert contributors to this volume reveal all that is currently known about the life and work of Paul Cushman, and place his business and pottery within broad and useful historical and aesthetic frameworks.
