Book Synopsis Vienna by : Tag Gronberg

Download or read book Vienna written by Tag Gronberg. This book was released on 2007. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century the question of what it meant to be modern was a heated topic of debate. Focusing on interior design, fashion and photography, as well as on painting and architecture, this study casts fresh light on the vital role of the arts in these debates. The 'new' art and literature was crucial in defining a distinctive Viennese modernity while at the same time challenging preconceptions about modern urban life. Many artists and writers produced work that questioned and undermined oppositions between city and country, interior spaces and panoramic views, masculinity and femininity. Issues of gender and the representation of the body were particularly important in establishing professional identities for some of Vienna's most prominent figures, including the Secessionist painters Gustav Klimt and Carl Moll, designers such as Adolf Loos and Emilie Flöge, as well as the poet and feuilletonist Peter Altenberg. Intellectual life in turn-of-the-century Vienna has often been characterised as a retreat from the public sphere. This book demonstrates how - even in its ostensibly most private manifestations - Viennese Modernism involved a highly performative set of practices aimed at an international audience.

Book Synopsis Vienna 1900 Complete by : Christian Brandstatter

Download or read book Vienna 1900 Complete written by Christian Brandstatter. This book was released on 2018-11-27. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exceptional volume brings together nearly 1,000 images representing the diversity and richness of the visual arts in Vienna at the turn of the 20th century. At the turn of the 20th century, Vienna became an epicenter for new thought, increasingly running counter to the prevalent conservatism symbolized by the neo-classical facades of the buildings in the city’s Ringstrasse. During the time of the modernist movement led by Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, and Koloman Moser, among others, a multidisciplinary environment emerged in which music, writing, and intellectual thought flourished, bringing different arts together in a “Gesamtkunstwerk” a total work of art. Covering all artistic fields, from painting to photography, the Wiener Werkstatte and decorative arts, fashion and architecture of fin-de-siecle Vienna and including biographies for featured artists, Vienna 1900 Complete is an unprecedented compilation of richly colored images curated and authored in a single volume by three leading scholars of the period.
