Book excerpt: The overall objective of this program is to determine the instantaneous flow structure on delta wings at high angle of attack as well as from cylindrical bodies, which are subjected to basic classes of motion. New techniques of high image density particle image velocimetry provide the instantaneous vorticity fields and streamline patterns, thereby allowing interpretation of the underlying physics using critical point theory. This type of quantitative interpretation of the flow structure is crucial for performing vorticity balances on wings and bodies and thereby optimization of overall performance characteristics. Furthermore, for the case of the delta wing at high angle of attack, local control techniques are applied simultaneously at leading and trailing edges of the wing, in order to alter the crucial features of vortex breakdown and subsequent large scale stall. Such control techniques have application to a wide variety of separated flows from wings and cylindrical bodies.

Book excerpt: The Third Symposium on Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows, like its immediate predecessor, was organized with emphasis on the calculation of flows relevant to aircraft, ships, and missiles. Fifty-five papers and 20 brief communications were presented at the Symposium, which was held at the California State University at Long Beach from 21 to 24 January 1985. A panel discussion was chaired by A. M. O. Smith and includeq state ments by T. T. Huang, C. E. lobe, l. Nielsen, and C. K. Forester on priorities for future research. The first lecture in memory of Professor Keith Stewartson was delivered by J. T. Stuart and is reproduced in this volume together with a selection of the papers presented at the Symposium. In Volume II of this series, papers were selected so as to provide a clear indication of the range of procedures available to represent two-dimensional flows, their physical foundation, and their predictive ability. In this volume, the emphasis is on three-dimensional flows with a section of five papers concerned with unsteady flows and a section of seven papers on three dimensional flows: The papers deal mainly with calculation methods and encompass subsonic and transonic, attached and separated flows. The selec tion has been made so as to fulfill the same purpose for three-dimensional flows as did Volume II for two-dimensional flows.

Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the Fourth Symposium on Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows, which was held at the California State University, Long Beach, from 16-19 January 1989. It includes the Stewartson Memorial Lecture of Professor J. H. Whitelaw, and is divided into three parts. The first is a collection of papers that describe the status of current technology in two- and three-dimensional steady flows, the second deals with two- and three-dimensional unsteady flows, and the papers in the third address stability and transition. Each of the three parts begins with an overview of current research, as described in the following chapters. The individual papers are edited versions of the selected papers originally submitted to the symposium. Four years have passed since the Third Symposium, and certain trends be come clear if one compares the papers contained in this volume with those of previous volumes. There are more three- than two-dimensional problems consid ered in Part 1 and the latter address more difficult problems than in the past, for example, the extension to higher angles of attack, to transonic flow, to leading edge ice accretion, and to thick hydrofoils. The large number of papers in the first part reflects the emphasis of current research and development and the needs of industry.
