Book Synopsis Unmasking the Masculine by : Alan R. Petersen

Download or read book Unmasking the Masculine written by Alan R. Petersen. This book was released on 1998-07-08. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postmodernism and poststructuralism have undermined the assumptions upon which established identities have been constructed, such as the concept of stable bodies and stable selves. Sex, gender, sexuality and race are no longer viewed as merely descriptive aspects of experience but also as constructions of identity. Drawing on current debates in postmodern feminism, feminist philosophy of science, anti-racist/postcolonial studies and queer theory, this book considers the way in which discourse fabricates the ideal' male body, sexual identity and sexual politics. Alan Petersen explores the possibilities of developing new models of identity not so closely linked to the sex/gender system and examines the prospects of creating a new or reconceptualized identity politics.

Book Synopsis Unmasking Masculinity (Routledge Revivals) by : David Jackson

Download or read book Unmasking Masculinity (Routledge Revivals) written by David Jackson. This book was released on 2015-08-11. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this detailed investigation of ‘masculine’ gendered identity, first published in 1990, David Jackson uses his own personal history to look at the specific ways in which men become ‘masculine’. In doing so he examines, but also offers some positive challenges to, the assumed qualities and values of growing up ‘manly’. Jackson looks closely at the psychological and social forces active in his own development: relations with his father, violence at school, male banter and joking, sporting activities, boys’ comics, and sexual relations. The title is a deliberate blend between life story and critical commentary that makes use of some areas of post-structuralist theory to make visible the social and emotional processes that contribute to one man’s life history. With an innovative theoretical approach, this reissue will be of particular value to those interested in the social, psychological and cultural forces that have gone into the historical shaping of men and masculinities.

Book Synopsis Unmasking by : Keith E. Edwards

Download or read book Unmasking written by Keith E. Edwards. This book was released on 2023-05. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though men as a group have power, individual men often feel powerless. These contradictory experiences contribute to men's hurting-hurting others and being hurt. Based on more than fifteen years of research, Keith E. Edwards, PhD, illuminates men's masking, unmasking, and becoming to help men develop their own authentic masculinity. He also shares strategies to help us all better engage the men in our lives with empathy, reach them with compassion, effectively hold them accountable, and help them to become the men they aspire to be. The men in his study thought they had a unique secret, but they all shared the same secret. They each wore masks to hide their insecurities and portray an image that would be seen as "man enough" according to the external expectations of them as men. These external expectations oppress women and transgender people, place some men above other men, and limit all men. Men struggle with their unmasking. Too often, as soon as their insecurities reemerge, the mask snaps back into place as though attached with an elastic cord. With mask consciousness, men can engage in their own process of becoming by exploring their identity and practicing aligning their actions with integrity.
