Book Synopsis Understanding Variable Stars by : John R. Percy

Download or read book Understanding Variable Stars written by John R. Percy. This book was released on 2007-05-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 2007. Variable stars are those that change brightness. Their variability may be due to geometric processes such as rotation, or eclipse by a companion star, or physical processes such as vibration, flares, or cataclysmic explosions. In each case, variable stars provide unique information about the properties of stars, and the processes that go on within them. This book provides a concise overview of variable stars, including a historical perspective, an introduction to stars in general, the techniques for discovering and studying variable stars, and a description of the main types of variable stars. It ends with short reflections about the connection between the study of variable stars, and research, education, amateur astronomy, and public interest in astronomy. This book is intended for anyone with some background knowledge of astronomy, but is especially suitable for undergraduate students and experienced amateur astronomers who can contribute to our understanding of these important stars.

Book Synopsis Pulsating Stars by : Márcio Catelan

Download or read book Pulsating Stars written by Márcio Catelan. This book was released on 2015-03-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys our understanding of stars which change in brightness because they pulsate. Pulsating variable stars are keys to distance scales inside and beyond the Milky Way galaxy. They test our understanding not only of stellar pulsation theory but also of stellar structure and evolution theory. Moreover, pulsating stars are important probes of the formation and evolution of our own and neighboring galaxies. Our understanding of pulsating stars has greatly increased in recent years as large-scale surveys of pulsating stars in the Milky Way and other Local Group galaxies have provided a wealth of new observations and as space-based instruments have studied particular pulsating stars in unprecedented detail.

Book Synopsis Stellar Structure and Evolution by : Rudolf Kippenhahn

Download or read book Stellar Structure and Evolution written by Rudolf Kippenhahn. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete and comprehensive treatment of the physics of the stellar interior and the underlying fundamental processes and parameters. The text presents an overview of the models developed to explain the stability, dynamics and evolution of the stars, and great care is taken to detail the various stages in a star's life. The authors have succeeded in producing a unique text based on their own pioneering work in stellar modeling. Since its publication, this textbook has come to be considered a classic by both readers and teachers in astrophysics. This study edition is intended for students in astronomy and physics alike.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Study of Variable Stars by : Caroline Ellen Furness

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Variable Stars written by Caroline Ellen Furness. This book was released on 2015-06-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Variable Stars During the past few years the subject of variable stars has become increasingly interesting to the amateur who is the owner of a telescope, as well as to the average college student who has some knowledge of astronomy, while to the research worker it offers many line of investigation which are full of promise. However, so complex is the subject, and so diverse the principles involved in a complete understanding of it, that extensive reading in several different directions is required as a foundation. It is with the purpose of supplying this need as well as of making an important and attractive branch of astronomy accessible to the student that the present volume has been prepared. It is the outcome of several years of teaching the subject in Vassar College, for which the material was primarily collected. This material is scattered throughout various periodicals in the form either of research papers or quite popular articles, intended to give directions for observation to owners of small telescopes. A large amount of historical matter is also included, which is taken from sources not within easy reach of the general reader. Mention may be made of some of the subjects treated, which are introductory to the study of stellar variation, such as the study of the Durchmusterung charts, photometry in all its branches, spectroscopy, and star color. The purpose of the present volume is to consider all of these points, and in particular to give in as simple and clear a form as possible a full presentation of the physical principles upon which many of the instruments and methods of investigation are based, principles such as those of polarized light, spectrum analysis, the formation of the photographic image, and photo-electricity.
