Book Synopsis Typological Studies by : Guglielmo Cinque

Download or read book Typological Studies written by Guglielmo Cinque. This book was released on 2014-02-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Cinque takes a generative perspective on typological questions relating to word order and to the syntax of relative clauses. In particular, Cinque looks at: the position of the Head vis à vis the relative clause in relation to the position of the verb vis à vis his object; a general cross-linguistic analysis of correlatives; the need to distinguish a sentence-grammar, from a discourse-grammar, type of non-restrictives (with languages differing as to whether they possess both, one, the other, or neither); a selective type of extraction from relative clauses; and a tentative sketch of a more ample work in progress on a unified analysis of externally headed, internally headed, and headless relative clauses.

Book Synopsis Typological Studies in Negation by : Peter Kahrel

Download or read book Typological Studies in Negation written by Peter Kahrel. This book was released on 1994-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles offers descriptions of the negation system in 16 languages. As not much is known about negation systems in non-European languages, the first aim of the volume is to provide data on various aspects on negation; for all articles these data were collected on the basis of the same questionnaire. Most work on this subject deals with syntactic aspects of negation; this volume attempts to include pragmatic and semantic issues as well, such as the expression of negative indefinites, interaction of negation and quantifiers, the scope of negation, and the choice of a particular form of negation in cases where there are several ways to express this. For a number of less-known languages descriptions offering a wealth of data are presented here, and in the articles about well-studied languages, new data and analyses of more complicated issues are provided.

Book Synopsis Typological Studies in Word and Sentence Prosody by : Tomas Riad

Download or read book Typological Studies in Word and Sentence Prosody written by Tomas Riad. This book was released on 2009-02-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the recent advances in the integration of lexical tone and intonation in phonological theory, all too often the study of intonation and the study of lexical tone are viewed as belonging to different research traditions. This collection strengthens the integrated approach by studying tone and intonation within a common framework, and by tracing their interaction in specific prosodic systems. Some papers deal with the structural properties of lexical tone and intonation, while others focus on the historical development of prosodic systems. The volume also includes a re-evaluation of a classic paper on the typology of tone rules, and a survey of features signalling question intonation in African languages.
