Book Synopsis Tunable Microwave Metamaterial Structures by : Matthias Maasch

Download or read book Tunable Microwave Metamaterial Structures written by Matthias Maasch. This book was released on 2016-01-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents original findings on tunable microwave metamaterial structures, and describes the theoretical and practical issues involved in the design of metamaterial devices. Special emphasis is given to tunable elements and their advantages in terms of feeding network simplification. Different biasing schemes and feeding network topologies are presented, together with extensive prototype measurements and simulations. The book describes a novel, unique solution for beam steering and beam forming applications, and thus paves the way for the diffusion of new agile communication system components. At the same time, it provides readers with an outstanding and timely review of wave propagation in periodic structures, tunability of metamaterials and the technological constraints that need to be considered in the design of reconfigurable microwave components.

Book Synopsis Micromachined Circuits and Devices by : Shiban Kishen Koul

Download or read book Micromachined Circuits and Devices written by Shiban Kishen Koul. This book was released on 2022-02-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the design of different switching and resonant devices using the present state-of-the-art radio frequency (RF) micromachining (MEMS) technology. Different topologies of MEMS switches have been discussed considering optimum performances over microwave to millimeter wave frequency range. Wide varieties of micromachined switching networks starting from single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) to single-pole-fourteen-throw (SP14T) are discussed utilizing vertical and lateral actuation movements of the switch. Different transduction mechanisms of micromachined resonators are highlighted that includes capacitive, piezoelectric, and piezoresistive types. The book provides major design guidelines for the development of MEMS-based digital phase shifters, tunable filters, and antennas with extensive measurement data. Apart from the radio frequency (RF) requirements, an extensive guideline is given for the improvement of the reliability of micromachined switches and digital phase shifters where multiple switches are operating simultaneously. It takes multiple iterations and extensive characterizations to conclude with a reliable MEMS digital phase shifter, and these aspects are given one of the prime attentions in this book. Detailed performance analysis of metamaterial inspired MEMS switches is then discussed for application in millimeter wave frequency bands up to about 170 GHz. The book concludes with future research activities of RF MEMS technology and its potential in space, defense, sensors, and biomedical applications.

Book Synopsis Metamaterial-inspired structures and their applications in microwave, millimeter-wave and terahertz planar circuits by : Ali Karami Horestani

Download or read book Metamaterial-inspired structures and their applications in microwave, millimeter-wave and terahertz planar circuits written by Ali Karami Horestani. This book was released on 2014. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metamaterials are generally defined as periodic composite structures that are engineered to modify the electromagnetic properties of materials, especially in order to achieve new physically realizable responses that may not be readily available in nature. The key to the application of metamaterial resonators for the synthesis of such effective media is their small electrical size. This feature can be also exploited for the miniaturization of planar circuits. Motivated by the need for miniaturized planar structures in mobile wireless systems, metamaterial-inspired structures are proposed throughout this thesis for the design of compact microwave, millimeter-wave and terahertz planar structures with improved performance. The thesis firstly proposes slow-wave and SRR-loaded coplanar strips resonators for the design of compact high quality factor balanced resonators for 60GHz VCOs in CMOS technology. Next, the thesis is focused on the miniaturization of microwave filters either by proposing resonators with dual-band functionality or through modifying the shape of metamaterial resonators. Shape modifications of metamaterial resonators are also used for the design of high-dynamic-range one- and two-dimensional displacement sensors as well as of a rotation sensor with improved dynamic range. It is further shown that high level of miniaturization can be achieved in a single-layer S-shaped SRR (S-SRR), if the loops of the S-SRR are excited by contra-directional magnetic fluxes, which makes the S-SRR very well suited for application in coplanar waveguide (CPW) technology. The thesis also proposes the dual counterpart of the S-shaped SRR, i.e., S-shaped complementary split ring resonator (S-CSRR) for application in the design of compact differential bandpass filters with inherent common-mode suppression. Finally, the application of SRRs to the design of compact bandpass filters for terahertz surface waves on single wire waveguides - the so-called planar Goubau lines (PGLs) - is studied numerically and experimentally. The results of this research show the versatility and potential of metamaterial-inspired resonators for the realization of miniaturized structures in planar technologies in different frequency bands.
