Book Synopsis Micromachined Circuits and Devices by : Shiban Kishen Koul

Download or read book Micromachined Circuits and Devices written by Shiban Kishen Koul. This book was released on 2022-02-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the design of different switching and resonant devices using the present state-of-the-art radio frequency (RF) micromachining (MEMS) technology. Different topologies of MEMS switches have been discussed considering optimum performances over microwave to millimeter wave frequency range. Wide varieties of micromachined switching networks starting from single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) to single-pole-fourteen-throw (SP14T) are discussed utilizing vertical and lateral actuation movements of the switch. Different transduction mechanisms of micromachined resonators are highlighted that includes capacitive, piezoelectric, and piezoresistive types. The book provides major design guidelines for the development of MEMS-based digital phase shifters, tunable filters, and antennas with extensive measurement data. Apart from the radio frequency (RF) requirements, an extensive guideline is given for the improvement of the reliability of micromachined switches and digital phase shifters where multiple switches are operating simultaneously. It takes multiple iterations and extensive characterizations to conclude with a reliable MEMS digital phase shifter, and these aspects are given one of the prime attentions in this book. Detailed performance analysis of metamaterial inspired MEMS switches is then discussed for application in millimeter wave frequency bands up to about 170 GHz. The book concludes with future research activities of RF MEMS technology and its potential in space, defense, sensors, and biomedical applications.

Book excerpt: This work presents the experimental realization and the performances of a magnetostatic microwave straight edge tunable resonator (SER) placed on a silicon membrane. The aim of this approach is to study a miniaturised device, integrable in a planar micromachined microwave circuit. S11 and S21 parameters of this device are presented for different magnetic bias fields, exhibiting frequency tunability between 4.2 GHz and 7.25 GHz. The utilization of silicon membranes to support these devices offers important openings toward the integration of magnetostatic wave devices with micromachined structures.

Book Synopsis Ferroelectrics in Microwave Devices, Circuits and Systems by : Spartak Gevorgian

Download or read book Ferroelectrics in Microwave Devices, Circuits and Systems written by Spartak Gevorgian. This book was released on 2009-05-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s wireless communications and information systems are heavily based on microwave technology. Current trends indicate that in the future along with - crowaves, the millimeter wave and Terahertz technologies will be used to meet the growing bandwidth and overall performance requirements. Moreover, motivated by the needs of the society, new industry sectors are gaining ground; such as wi- less sensor networks, safety and security systems, automotive, medical, envir- mental/food monitoring, radio tags etc. Furthermore, the progress and the pr- lems in the modern society indicate that in the future these systems have to be more user/consumer friendly, i. e. adaptable, reconfigurable and cost effective. The mobile phone is a typical example which today is much more than just a phone; it includes a range of new functionalities such as Internet, GPS, TV, etc. To handle, in a cost effective way, all available and new future standards, the growing n- ber of the channels and bandwidth both the mobile handsets and the associated systems have to be agile (adaptable/reconfigurable). The complex societal needs have initiated considerable activities in the field of cognitive and software defined radios and triggered extensive research in adequate components and technology platforms. To meet the stringent requirements of these systems, especially in ag- ity and cost, new components with enhanced performances and new functionalities are needed. In this sense the components based on ferroelectrics have greater - tential and already are gaining ground.
