Book excerpt: Tramping: A New Zealand history tells the story of the development of tramping in New Zealand, tracing its origins to the way Maori and early Europeans engaged with the sometimes forbidding New Zealand mountains and bush. It describes how state-sponsored tracks and huts were developed for tourism in the late nineteenth century, most notably on the Milford Track, described as 'the finest walk in the world'. As a growing number of New Zealanders began to explore the outdoors, the first tramping clubs were formed in the early twentieth century, with a subsequent boom in tramping during the 1930s. The growth of an extensive hut and track network in the 1950s and '60s saw New Zealand become one of the best-developed countries in the world for hiking. Trampers' battles to have national parks and wilderness areas established, changes to gear and technology, and the role women have played in tramping are additional themes.

Book Synopsis Tramping in New Zealand by : Shaun Barnett

Download or read book Tramping in New Zealand written by Shaun Barnett. This book was released on 2006. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tramping in New Zealand is a highly innovative new tramping guide, that has been developed around the latest generation of 'bird's eye' computer-generated maps. These completely accurate panoramic overviews are constructed from map data, but because they can recreate a view of the landscape from any angle or height they provide a remarkably readable and clear way of understanding the lie of the land. For trampers, these bird's eye maps offer a superb way of showing a tramping route in three dimensions. The tramps covered include our best known Great Walks, such as the Milford Track, the Routeburn and the Tongariro Crossing, and many others from both islands such as the Queen Charlotte Track, the Rees-Dart near Queenstown and the Pinnacles Hut on the Coromandel. Route guide information and photographs provided by Shaun Barnett, one of New Zealand's most respected tramping authors.

Book excerpt: "If you are interested in taking children tramping, or are a beginning tramper yourself, then Tramping with children is a great book to read before you lace up your boots. Part One features useful hints and information for tramping with children, including planning your trip, the unwritten rules for staying in huts, what to take with you, what to wear, and ideas for meal planning. It also covers helpful tips for tramping safely and dealing with emergency situations. Part Two has over thirty suggestions for South Island tramping tracks. These range from beginning to medium tracks and each section also explains why the tramp is suitable for children, and some also give a brief history of the track. Colour photographs show what many of the tracks and huts are like, and illustrate how children are quite capable of walking long distances.
