Book Synopsis Ananda Math by : Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay

Download or read book Ananda Math written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. This book was released on . Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most popular Indian novels of all ages, 'Ananda Math' was translated innumerable times into Indian and English languages. Five editions were published in Bengali and Hindi during the author's lifetime, the first in 1882. The novel has the backdrop of the 18th century famine in Bengal, infamous as "Chhiyattorer Manvantar" (famine of 76th Bengali year, 1276), to narrate the saga of armed uprising of the ascetics and their disciples against the pillaging East India Company rulers. The uprising is historically known as 'Santan Vidroha', the ascetics being the children of Goddess Jagadambe. The saga of 'Ananda Math' is thrilling and best epitomised in the patriotic mass-puller song "Bande Mataram' ('Hail thee, O My Motherland'). The song is still a mantra that stirs imagination of millions of Hindus. The ascetics robbed the tormentors of people — the British rulers and the greedy jamindars — distributed the looted wealth to poverty-stricken people but kept nothing for themselves. Their targets were mostly the Company armoury and supplies. They had a highly organised setup, spread throughout Bengal. It was also India's first battle for freedom, and not the Sipahi Vidroha of 1857.

Book Synopsis Towards Ananda by : Shakti Maira

Download or read book Towards Ananda written by Shakti Maira. This book was released on 2006-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who knows India is aware of its sophisticated aesthetic philosophy and equally rich history of making everyday things beautiful. Yet, most Indians, and travellers to India, have also experienced the great contrast between its ingrained beauty and its contemporary ugliness. Towards Ananda examines the many reasons for such a paradox, with particular focus on the visual arts. Unlike most books on Indian art and aesthetics which emphasize the ‘glorious past’ of the classical traditions, this one is centred on the present and the future—on contemporary art and its place in the emerging global art world. The author explores ancient theories of aesthetics in the light of contemporary challenges, and journeys across the country to distil the complex forces which have shaped Indian aesthetics. He also gives us an overview of Western ideologies and art movements, and their conflict with Eastern perspectives. In the course of the narrative, the author illustrates the application of the aesthetic values of balance, rhythm, harmony and proportionality in art—as also in economics, development strategies, health, education, city planning, architecture, and product design. Though the primary focus is India, the issues discussed, of purpose and practice, content and context, market forces and institutions, extend to all societies that are becoming homogenized by globalization. A book that engages the reader both intellectually and emotionally, Towards Ananda is a seamless chain of ideas about the production and consumption of art in modern times. As an insider’s view of the art world, it offers valuable insights into how artists see, think and work. And since art can never be separate from the experience of reality, it is also a provocative commentary on the state and society that we are a part of.

Book Synopsis Thailand by : Alexandra R. Kapur-Fic

Download or read book Thailand written by Alexandra R. Kapur-Fic. This book was released on 1998. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book Develops Two Major Themes. The First Theme Attempts To Understand The Sources Of Value Orientation Of The Thai People, And Their Individual And Group Behaviour. To This End The Study Examines Three Major Value Systems And Their Institutions, As Well As Their Mutual Relationship And Interaction. As The First Value System, The Study Examines The Theravada Buddhism As Founded By The Buddha, Then Focuses On Its Application In Thailand, On Buddhist Ethics And Morality, On The Conflicts Between Some Aspects Of Buddhism And The Rapidly Changing Society And, Finally, On Various Movements Attempting To Reform Buddhism In That Country. As The Second Major Value System, The Study Examines The Role Which Animism And The Spirit Worship Play In The Daily Life Of The Thai People, Their Symbolism, And Their Fusion With Buddhism And Its Values And Institutions At The Grassroot Level Of The Society. As The Third Value System, The Study Discusses Various Theories Which Attempt To Explain The Psycho-Cultural Values And Attitudes Of The Thai People, How These Interact With Buddhism And Animism, And How They Add Another Dimension To The Already Complex Pattern Of Social Behaviour. These Three Value Systems Interact And Define The Parameters Within Which All Aspects Of The National Life Political, Cultural, Economic And Others Are Actualized. The Second Major Theme Of The Book Concentrates On The Position Of Women In Thailand. It Begins With The Explanation Of The Attitudes Which The Buddha Himself Held Towards The Women, Examines The Status Of Women In Early Buddhist Societies And Of Those Women Who Chose To Renounce The World And Join The Buddhist Order To Seek Personal Salvation, As Well As The Role Of The Lay Women In A Buddhist Society At That Time. The Book Then Focuses On The Position Of Women In The Thai Society Through Various Stages Of Its History, And Culminates In The Discussion Of The Legal Position Of Women Today And The Attempts To Improve Their Status. However, In Treating The Latter Subject The Study Is Descriptive Rather Than Prescriptive, Leaving It To The Thai Women Themselves To Decide Which Remedies To Pursue To Improve Their Position.
