Book excerpt: "No one who cares about a theology that does justice to what the Bible tells us about the cosmic ministry of the Holy Spirit can afford to ignore this important work. Amos Yong's book itself displays the 'robust sense of discernment' that he asks all of us to exercise in our engagement with non-Christian religions." --RICHARD J. MOUW, Fuller Theological Seminary "Finally, a Spirit-based theology of religions that takes the Spirit seriously! Drawing on his Pentecostal roots, Yong offers guidelines for discerning the voice of the Spirit in other traditions-a voice that may call us to unexpected christological conclusions. This is truly a pioneering work that opens new theological paths but modestly recognizes that there is still much to explore." --PAUL F. KNITTER, Xavier University "Few areas in theology are as complex, controversial, and urgent as theology of religions. Amos Yong has advanced the discussion significantly with his creative and sophisticated proposal for a pneumatological theology of religions. While undoubtedly controversial, Yong's proposal frames the issues in fresh ways and suggests new options for an evangelical theology of religions." --Harold Netland, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School "With scholarly rigor and intellectual acumen, Yong's theology takes seriously and appreciatively the diversity of the work of the universal Spirit in the cultures and religious communities of the world. His position is fully evangelical but is richly informed by his Pentecostal roots and context. He sets this Pentecostal-evangelical theology of religions in the center of the ongoing discussion, not only among evangelicals, but also in the whole church." --John B. Cobb Jr., Claremont School of Theology and Claremont Graduate Schools "An insightful theological reflection on the place of world religions within the broader framework of Christian theology. Yong provides a theological basis for everyday interaction with members of other religions and an understanding of other religious traditions in the providence of God. This is an excellent book that ought to be widely read and discussed." --Irving Hexham, University of Calgary

Book excerpt: Pentecostalism has been known much more for its religious experientialism than for its theology. During the past generation, however, Pentecostals have taken up the task of reflecting theologically from their experience of the Spirit of God. This book represents Pentecostal theology at its best, being thoroughly and unabashedly Pentecostal on the one hand, and yet being deeply ecumenical on the other. Within this dual Pentecostal and ecumenical framework, it offers Spirit-centered theological perspectives on the doctrine of the Church (ecclesiology), the doctrine of the salvation (soteriology), and the ministry and witness of Christians to the world (theology of mission). Toward a Pneumatological Theology is a sign that Pentecostal theology has come of age. It furthers the discussion of what it means to do Christian theology by starting with the Spirit of God, thereby demonstrating that Pentecostalism may indeed have something unique and distinctive to offer theologically to the larger Christian Church. At the same time, it will also be of interest to those who wish to begin understanding Pentecostalism on its own terms as well as to those who have followed closely the history and theology of the movement.

Book excerpt: From the outset, cultures and neighboring faith traditions have influenced the development of Christian theology. This process continues even today, as Christians in the West are encountering a whole host of other believers, including Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists. As people of all faiths come together, Christians have begun asking some important questions: How does Christianity differ from other faiths? Can Christians learn from other religions? And if so, can other religions learn from Christianity? Many Christians have looked to other religions and wondered whether Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus can be saved. But according to Amos Young, Christians should rather seek to understand the role and purpose of religions in the overall providential plan of God. While not ignoring questions about salvation through other religions, Yong asks Christians to focus on the work of the Holy Spirit, which is both universal and particular. In other words, God creates human beings by breathing his spirit into them, and yet the Spirit is sent by Jesus to a particular group of people. Recognizing the various understandings of the Spirit in Scripture helps Christians to take seriously the variety of world religions and consider that dialogue with these religions might well spark a renaissance of Christian theology in the twenty-first century. Beyond the Impasse will appeal to pastors, students, and laypeople interested in formulating a robust, biblical, and comprehensive Christian theology of religions.

Book Synopsis Spirit of the Arts by : Steven Félix-Jäger

Download or read book Spirit of the Arts written by Steven Félix-Jäger. This book was released on 2017-11-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A contribution to the field of theological aesthetics, this book explores the arts in and around the Pentecostal and charismatic renewal movements. It proposes a pneumatological model for creativity and the arts, and discusses different art forms from the perspective of that model. Pentecostals and other charismatic Christians have not sufficiently worked out matters of aesthetics, or teased out the great religious possibilities of engaging with the arts. With the flourishing of Pentecostal culture comes the potential for an equally flourishing artistic life. As this book demonstrates, renewal movements have participated in the arts but have not systematized their findings in ways that express their theological commitments—until now. The book examines how to approach art in ways that are communal, dialogical, and theologically cultivating.
