Book Synopsis Tourism and Monarchy in Southeast Asia by : Ploysri Porananond

Download or read book Tourism and Monarchy in Southeast Asia written by Ploysri Porananond. This book was released on 2016-09-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monarchies around the world play a significant role in tourism development and the tourist experience. Debates about the level of finance required to support monarchies often refer to the positive tourist attraction provided by royal pageantry, palaces, temples and churches, architecture, museum collections, and historical legacies. Up to now, the literature on tourism and monarchy has been primarily devoted to the history and experiences of Western Europe, particularly the United Kingdom. There has been little attention devoted to the relationship between monarchy and tourism development in Southeast Asia, and this is the first collection of essays to address this neglected field of study. The need to shift the focus from European to Asian royalty is important not only to begin to fill gaps in the literature on monarchy and tourism outside Europe, but also to avoid the increasing criticism of tourism studies that its major perspectives, orientations and paradigms have been based on an overly Eurocentric preoccupation. Case studies are taken from Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.

Download or read book Rethinking Cultural Resource Management in Southeast Asia written by John N. Miksic. This book was released on 2011-12-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting both the need for – and difficulty of – introducing effective cultural resource management (CRM) in the region, ‘Rethinking Cultural Resource Management’ in Southeast Asia explores the challenges facing efforts to protect Southeast Asia’s indigenous cultures and archaeological sites from the ravages of tourism and economic development. Recognising the inapplicability of Euro-American solutions to this part of the world, the essays of this volume investigate their own set of region-specific CRM strategies, and acknowledge both the necessity and possibility of mediating between the conflicting interests of short-term profitability and long-term sustainability.

Download or read book Heritage and Cultural Heritage Tourism written by Pei-Lin Yu. This book was released on 2023-11-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the state of the art on cultural heritage and tourism globally. Divided into four themes of historical and economic contexts; building resilient societies; de-colonization, community, and placemaking; and empowerment and social capital, the book analyses the relevance of heritage and includes case studies in sustainable cultural heritage. It offers vital context and guidance for those working in heritage management and also presents emerging cultural heritage challenges and opportunities. The volume presents a research agenda for understanding the role of heritage in identity, ecology, health and well-being and its application to heritage tourism. It discusses the need for partnerships between tourism and cultural heritage management and the need to establish better information sharing for establishing joint research initiatives. The central importance of sharing and incorporating Indigenous and/or local voices in order to expand tourists' understanding of cultural heritage runs throughout the volume. The book highlights on-the-ground tools and guidance for cultural heritage resource managers and includes a discussion on emerging and convergent challenges such as the impacts of COVID-19 and climate disasters, featuring heritage and tourism from across the globe with emphasis on the dynamic situation in East and SE Asia. A concluding chapter summarizes themes and trends and future directions for this area of research with a focus on theoretical contributions. This book is of interest to heritage scholars and practitioners.
