Book excerpt: A cylindrical toroid cavity has been developed for application as an NMR detector for high sensitivity and high resolution spectroscopy in metal vessel probes. Those probes are used for in situ investigations at high temperature and pressure. Since the transmitted r.f. field is completely confined within the torus, the cavity can be placed inside the pressurized system without magnetic coupling to the metal vessel. Resonance frequencies up to 400 MHz make the toroid cavity detector especially suited for use in 1H and 19F spectroscopy. Typically achieved static 1H linewidths, measured on CHCl3 using cavities in Be-Cu pressure vessels, are 2.0 Hz. On the basis of theoretical considerations that include the radial dependence of the r.f. field within cylindrical or circular toroid detectors, equations were evolved to predict the signal intensity as a function of the pulse width. The equations precisely describe the deviations from the sinusoidal approximation, which is generally used for signal intensities derived from Helmholtz or solenoid coils.

Book excerpt: A Toroid Cavity Detector (TCD) is provided for implementing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies of chemical reactions under conditions of high pressures and temperatures. A toroid cavity contains an elongated central conductor extending within the toroid cavity. The toroid cavity and central conductor generate an RF magnetic field for NMR analysis. A flow-through capillary sample container is located within the toroid cavity adjacent to the central conductor to subject a sample material flowing through the capillary to a static magnetic field and to enable NMR spectra to be recorded of the material in the capillary under a temperature and high pressure environment.

Book Synopsis Mechanisms in Homogeneous Catalysis by : Brian Heaton

Download or read book Mechanisms in Homogeneous Catalysis written by Brian Heaton. This book was released on 2006-03-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While chemists using spectroscopic methods need to learn from the specialists, they do not normally read the spectroscopists' original papers. This book provides this very information -- summarizing some recent advances in the mechanistic understanding of metallocene polymerization catalysts and the role of NMR spectroscopy in these endeavors. Adopting a real practice-oriented approach, the authors focus on two of the most important spectroscopic techniques with two parts devoted to each of NMR and IR spectroscopy - as well as on important industrial applications with regard to the reaction discussed. Rather than providing a complete and exhaustive review of homogeneous hydrogenation and its detailed mechanisms, the book focuses on the specific spectroscopic techniques and the mechanistic information that has been obtained from their application. The result is unique in its scope, allowing chemists from different fields to learn which techniques can be applied for their specific synthetic problems. The prizewinning editor, Professor Brian Heaton, is the key player in the field, and has brought together here a team of authors to cater for specialists, and researchers in industry and academia.

Book excerpt: Achemist, facedwiththeproblemofdeterminingthemechanismofachemical reaction, tries to identify a set of reactions that will account for the observed behavior:Ideally, asmallsetofknownreactionsshoulddescribeingreatdetail exactly what takes place at each stage of a chemical transformation. The fact that many reactions proceed in a stepwise fashion can most convincingly be demonstrated if intermediate species can be isolated and shown to proceed to the same products under otherwise identical reaction conditions. An - termediate is the reaction product of each of these steps, except for the last onethatformsthe?nalproduct. Someintermediatesarestablecompoundsin theirownright;someothers, however, aresoreactivethattheirisolationisnot possible. Occasionally, evidence for the existence of short-lived intermediates may be obtained, in particular by spectroscopic observation. The latter may - low a direct observation or an indirect inference from unusual phenomena occurring in the reaction products during in situ investigations of their c- responding chemical reactions. In NMR spectroscopy, for example, transient emissionandenhanced absorptionlinesmaybeobserved, andoneisinclined to believe that there is a universal and unambiguous reason for their appe- ance. Thisisnotnecessarilythecase, however, sincethisseeminglyidentical phenomenon may have a strikingly different origin: During free radical re- tions, aphenomenoncalledchemicallyinduced dynamicnuclear polarization (CIDNP) may give rise to virtually the same effect as occasionally observed duringhomogeneous(andpossiblyevenheterogeneous)hydrogenations:The latter phenomenon, called parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP), has a completely different physical basis. It was ?rst noticed twenty years later than CIDNP and occurs if there is an imbalance of the two spin isomers of symmetric molecules such as dihydrogen when hydrogenating unsaturated compoundsusingappropriatecatalysts. Thesetwoeffects, ifnotdifferentiated properly, can cause misinterpretations of reaction mechanisms, as occurred initially when their different origins had not yet been understood approp- ately.
