Download or read book Interdisciplinary Topics in Applied Mathematics, Modeling and Computational Science written by Monica G. Cojocaru. This book was released on 2015-07-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Applied Mathematics, Modelling, and Computational Science (AMMCS) conference aims to promote interdisciplinary research and collaboration. The contributions in this volume cover the latest research in mathematical and computational sciences, modeling, and simulation as well as their applications in natural and social sciences, engineering and technology, industry, and finance. The 2013 conference, the second in a series of AMMCS meetings, was held August 26—30 and organized in cooperation with AIMS and SIAM, with support from the Fields Institute in Toronto, and Wilfrid Laurier University. There were many young scientists at AMMCS-2013, both as presenters and as organizers. This proceedings contains refereed papers contributed by the participants of the AMMCS-2013 after the conference. This volume is suitable for researchers and graduate students, mathematicians and engineers, industrialists, and anyone who would like to delve into the interdisciplinary research of applied and computational mathematics and its areas of applications.

Book Synopsis Topics in Mathematical Modeling by : Ka-Kit Tung

Download or read book Topics in Mathematical Modeling written by Ka-Kit Tung. This book was released on 2016-06-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topics in Mathematical Modeling is an introductory textbook on mathematical modeling. The book teaches how simple mathematics can help formulate and solve real problems of current research interest in a wide range of fields, including biology, ecology, computer science, geophysics, engineering, and the social sciences. Yet the prerequisites are minimal: calculus and elementary differential equations. Among the many topics addressed are HIV; plant phyllotaxis; global warming; the World Wide Web; plant and animal vascular networks; social networks; chaos and fractals; marriage and divorce; and El Niño. Traditional modeling topics such as predator-prey interaction, harvesting, and wars of attrition are also included. Most chapters begin with the history of a problem, follow with a demonstration of how it can be modeled using various mathematical tools, and close with a discussion of its remaining unsolved aspects. Designed for a one-semester course, the book progresses from problems that can be solved with relatively simple mathematics to ones that require more sophisticated methods. The math techniques are taught as needed to solve the problem being addressed, and each chapter is designed to be largely independent to give teachers flexibility. The book, which can be used as an overview and introduction to applied mathematics, is particularly suitable for sophomore, junior, and senior students in math, science, and engineering.

Book excerpt: The analysis and interpretation of mathematical models is an essential part of the modern scientific process. Topics in Applied Mathematics and Modeling is designed for a one-semester course in this area aimed at a wide undergraduate audience in the mathematical sciences. The prerequisite for access is exposure to the central ideas of linear algebra and ordinary differential equations. The subjects explored in the book are dimensional analysis and scaling, dynamical systems, perturbation methods, and calculus of variations. These are immense subjects of wide applicability and a fertile ground for critical thinking and quantitative reasoning, in which every student of mathematics should have some experience. Students who use this book will enhance their understanding of mathematics, acquire tools to explore meaningful scientific problems, and increase their preparedness for future research and advanced studies. The highlights of the book are case studies and mini-projects, which illustrate the mathematics in action. The book also contains a wealth of examples, figures, and regular exercises to support teaching and learning. The book includes opportunities for computer-aided explorations, and each chapter contains a bibliography with references covering further details of the material.
