Book excerpt: Reed (1852-93) was an English writer of boys' fiction who established a genre of school stories that endured into the mid-20th century. He was a regular and prolific contributor to The Boys' Own Paper in which most of his fiction appeared in serial form prior to book publication. His best known work was The Fifth Form at St Dominic's, the first of his sequence of boarding school stories, which extended over 38 episodes serialised in The Boys' Own Paper from 1881-82, each a self-contained unit within an overall plot, and appearing in book form published by The Religious Tract Society in 1887. This story was serialised in The B.O.P. from 1892-93 and first published in book form by The Religious Tract Society in 1894.
