Book excerpt: An easygoing, storytelling style makes this offering from Tiger Woods's high school coach a delight. Tiger Woods Made Me Look Like a Genius weaves Don Crosby's golfing techniques into the story of coaching the champion and how Woods's own methods meshed with and enhanced Crosby's approach. Coach Don Crosby has only a 12-week season to turn ragtag teenage duffers into championship contenders. With no time to waste, he focuses on five basics that can take ten strokes off anyone's score: The Practice Range-good for two shots off your game The Short Game-the surest way to lower your score is to chip away at it Putting-imagine no three-putt greens Course Management-a course you know is two shots easier than one you don't Stats-you can't get better unless you know how you're doing Tiger Woods Made Me Look Like a Genius is a handbook of Crosby's golfing techniques and strategies, sprinkled liberally with his personal recollections and anecdotes of the good old days when he coached the young Tiger. The stories, "Crosby's True Tales," bring the mechanics of golf to life, illustrating how these five techniques work and what to expect from them, while offering an intimate look at the evolution of champion Tiger Woods. The book also features an insert with photographs and memorabilia from these special days of coaching.

Book excerpt: The essays in this book arise from the premise that Tiger Woods is not simply a phenomenal player but is also an Everyman who has displayed all-too-human foibles and weaknesses. The first half of the collection focuses on Tiger's superman game and how he has affected, and been affected by, the golfing world. Works on the sport that examine this supreme golfer cannot capture the full significance of the Tiger Woods phenomenon, however. Unlike many other talented athletes, Woods has transcended his sport, becoming a cultural icon. In the second half of the book, scholars examine everyman Tiger, illustrating how his life reflects significant and often contentious issues within American culture and the world.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive biography of Tiger Woods looks at where he came from, his sports accomplishments and philanthropic efforts, and the effect he has had on sports history, marketing, and broadcasting. Tiger Woods: A Biography, Second Edition updates the 2005 edition to examine the life and career of this phenomenal athlete through the 2009 PGA Championship. The book provides information about Woods's parents and his upbringing, early life, and outstanding accomplishments as a professional golfer. It also covers Tiger's philanthropic activities including the Tiger Woods Foundation, a global organization that provides innovative educational opportunities to youth, the Tiger Woods Learning Center, and the Earl Woods Scholarship Program established to honor the spirit and vision of Tiger's father. Recognizing that the opportunities Woods has had were hard won by early African American golfers—who were denied the right to play on the PGA Tour until 1961—the book also includes a chapter on these pioneers. The volume is rounded out with a brief history of broadcasting and sports, as well as a look at the relationship between athletes and sponsors.

Download or read book How To Get There From Here...The Ten Lessons That Have Served Me Well written by Coleman H. Peterson. This book was released on 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THEN AND NOW In 1971, as an undergraduate student at Loyola University of Chicago, I often sat on the steps of the Chicago Water Tower during class breaks. I watched the traffic flowing north and south along Michigan Avenue's bustling Magnificent Mile. As a kid who hailed from the housing projects on the west side of Chicago, I marveled at the late model cars, beautifully tailored pedestrians and the expensive boutiques that lined the street. I often wondered, "How do you get there from here?" In 1994, I arrived in Bentonville, Arkansas to assume my new post as the Senior Vice-President of the People Division for Wal-Mart Stores (Sam Walton's term for human resources). Soon to become the world's largest retailer and private employer, a Fortune #1 company and among the Fortune 100 Best Companies To Work For. I had experienced an exciting and satisfying journey. Today, residing on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina I enjoy my role as consultant and corporate board member for several public companies. Over the years, I have shared my thoughts on "getting there from here" in many places around the world. Why not finally put them in a book? Good question. This book is my answer. Enjoy.
