Book Synopsis Theophrastus of Eresus: On Weather Signs by : C.W. Brunschön

Download or read book Theophrastus of Eresus: On Weather Signs written by C.W. Brunschön. This book was released on 2007-03-31. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Weather Signs, traditionally ascribed to Theophrastus, contains the most complete list of such signs in antiquity and it was, in this or some very similar form, consulted by Aratus, Vergil (in Georgics I), and Pliny the Elder, as well as by many other authors throughout the Byzantine period. This edition is the first to take account of all the manuscripts and the commentary, the first in over a century, is on a far grander scale than earlier ones by Schneider (1818-21) and Wood (1894), listing almost all parallel texts for each sign. The introduction places the work in the context of its genre and for the first time lays out the details of its manuscript tradition.

Book Synopsis Theophrastus of Eresus: On Winds by : Robert Mayhew

Download or read book Theophrastus of Eresus: On Winds written by Robert Mayhew. This book was released on 2017-09-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Theophrastus of Eresus: On Winds, Robert Mayhew provides a critical edition of the Greek text with English translation and commentary on the sole Peripatetic treatise devoted specifically to winds, by Aristotle’s successor in the Lyceum. This is the first edition of this text to appear in over forty years, and the first ever to make use not only of the twelve medieval manuscripts but also of the Oxyrhynchus papyrus fragment of this work (first published in 1986). The lengthy commentary attempts to explain this difficult (and often corrupt) text and its relationship to Aristotle’s meteorological theory and scientific methodology.

Book excerpt: This series in the field of classics grew out of Project Theophrastus, an international undertaking whose goal is to collect, edit, and comment on the fragments of Theophrastus, Greek philosopher, Aristotle's pupil and second head of the Peripatetic School. Contributions are by international experts, and each volume will have a particular focus. Volume I is devoted to Arius Didymus, court philosopher to Caesar Augustus and author of an extensive survey of Stoic and Peripatetic ethics. Volumes II and III will concentrate on Theophrastus and disseminate knowledge gained through work on the project. Volume IV will focus on Cicero and his knowledge of Hellenistic philosophy.
