Book Synopsis The Wor(l)ds of Neapolitan Arts and Crafts by : Raffaella Antinucci

Download or read book The Wor(l)ds of Neapolitan Arts and Crafts written by Raffaella Antinucci. This book was released on 2019-07-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays investigates the terminology of traditional Neapolitan arts and crafts analyzed from a novel linguistic and cultural perspective. With some exceptions, the trades examined in the contributions—including pizza and pastry making, the art of presepio (crib), lute-making and coral dealing, among others—still exist in Naples and in the Campania region. They represent an important component of the cultural heritage of the area that this volume brings to light by furthering current research in the fields of terminology, history and cultural anthropology. The book is divided into two sections, corresponding to the two languages in which the articles are written (English and French), although the terminological analyses also focus on Italian, Neapolitan and Spanish. This choice is expressly demanded by the political legacy of Naples, which for six centuries was alternately dominated by French, Spanish and Austrian rulers whose lasting influence on the city’s traditions and language the essays explore.

Book Synopsis Italian Crafts by : Janet D'Amato

Download or read book Italian Crafts written by Janet D'Amato. This book was released on 2014-07-28. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The folk artists of Italy have created some of the most beautiful crafts in the world: laces, mosaics, leatherwork, quilting, and wood inlay are among the most well-known. In this vintage book, originally published in 1977, Janet and Alex D’Amato explore these traditional Italian crafts as well as others not so well known, such as tambour (a kind of crocheting worked directly into a fabric), straw marquetry (a mosaic-like craft done with tiny pieces of straw), wood carving and quillwork. They explain each craft as it was originally practiced, then adapt it to make contemporary craft pieces. The projects include an embroidered full length apron, a bobbin lace wall hanging, a straw marquetry box, jewelry, and many more. Also included are instructions for a Presepio (a traditional Italian manger scene) and a Pinocchio marionette. Italian Crafts will teach you the traditional folk arts of Italy, and will inspire you to use those folk arts in new and creative ways. There are line drawings and photographs throughout this unique book.

Book Synopsis The Neapolitan Crèche at the Art Institute of Chicago by : Art Institute of Chicago

Download or read book The Neapolitan Crèche at the Art Institute of Chicago written by Art Institute of Chicago. This book was released on 2016-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 18th-century Neapolitan crèche at the Art Institute of Chicago, which contains over 200 figures arranged in a panorama of street life, represents the pinnacle of a rich artistic heritage. This luxurious catalogue is the first to study the crèche in the context of art and music history. Essays explore the Neapolitan crèche tradition and examine the design of Chicago's example with reference to other important crèches in Europe and the United States. Entries on individual figures identify the characters and types they represent, as well as their social and historical meaning and religious significance. Other entries address groups of figures, animals, and cultural themes present in the crèche. Together the essays and entries highlight the astonishing realism and potent symbolism of these figures, which range from heavenly angels and the Holy Family around the manger to street vendors and revelers feasting, drinking, and dancing in a tavern.

Book Synopsis Napoli Unplugged Guide to Naples by : Bonnie Alberts

Download or read book Napoli Unplugged Guide to Naples written by Bonnie Alberts. This book was released on 2015-03-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Napoli Unplugged Guide to Naples is not your typical guidebook. Written for the intrepid traveller seeking a more profound experience, the NU Guide delves deep - deep enough to catch the cultural heartbeat of the city. It's a must-have for anyone with more than just a passing interest in Naples and you'll want to revisit the book again and again, long after your return home. There's also plenty here to satisfy the wanderlust of armchair travellers. Written by four women united by a common passion - Napoli - who love to wax lyrical about their adoptive city, it makes you feel you're seeing Naples through the eyes of your best friends. Their own enthusiasms are multiple: art, archaeology and architecture; history and mythology; music, dance and theatre; food and wine, the islands and the beach - even shopping - and each subject has its narrative moment in the spotlight. The prose is embellished by many beautiful photographs, urban sketches and plein-air paintings by artists who couldn't resist the siren call of Parthenope. From the parallel city hidden below Naples' bustling streets to the summit of Vesuvius, the authors explore the city - one of the oldest in the Western world, the bay - surely the most stunning, and a little further afield in Campania. Rambles Through the City explores Naples by the neighbourhood - its historic and municipal centres as well as its hill districts and is enhanced by creative cartography to orient the reader; Outings in the Outskirts dives into the Bay of Naples and a bit beyond - the Vesuvius Excavations, the Phlegraean Fields and the glories of the Amalfi Coast; Ventures in a Different Vein feeds the mind and delights the senses with a section dedicated entirely to Naples' history, and finally, the authors outline an immersion course in the city's music, theatre and food and wine cultures. Each section is equipped with practical advice on transport, opening hours, essential numbers - and the book is topped off with a thematic index offering the reader other pathways of discovery into the city. Visit Naples, discover Napoli!
