D., Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin, Vol. 9 of 19 I could wish the parliament had thought fit to have suspended their regulation of church matters, and enlargements of the prerogative, until a more convenient time, because they did not appear very pressing, at least to the persons principally concern ed; and, instead of these great refinements in poli ticks and divinity, had amused themselves and their committees a little with the state of the na tion. For exztmple what if the house of commons had thought fit to make a resolution, amine con tradioeme, against wearing any cloth or stuff in their families, which were not of the growth and manufacture of this kingdom? What if they had extended it so far as utterly to exclude all silks, velvets, callicoes, and the whole lexicon of fe male fopperies; and declared, that whoever acted otherwise should be deemed and reputed an enemy to the nation? What if they had sent up such a resolution to be agreed to by the house of lords; and by their own practice and encouragement, spread the execution of it in their several coun tries? What if we should agree to make burying in woollen a fashion, as our neighbours have made it a law? What if the ladies would be content with Irish stuffs for the furniture of their houses, for gowns and petticoats for themselves and their daughters Upon the whole, and to crown all the rest, let a firm resolution be taken by male and female, never to appear with one single sh red that comes from England; and let all the people say, amen. Jonathan Swift, D.D., Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin, Vol. 6 of 19 Dean into England, with an intention to publish them. But lord Bolingbroke, on whose judgment be relied, dissuaded him from that design. He told the Dean, there were several facts he knew to be false, and that the whole was so much in the spirit of party-wntmg, that though it might have made a seasonable pamphlet in the time of the admlnistration, it was a dishonour to just history. It is to be observed, that the treasurer Oxford was the hero of the story. The Dean would do nothing against his friend's judgment, yet it extremely chagrined him; and he told a common friend, that since lord Bolingbroke did not ap prove his h1story, he would cast It 11110 the fire, though it was the best work he had ever wruten. However, It did not undergo this fate, and is sa1d so be yet 111 being. Warburton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Truth is a kind of contraband commodity which I would not venture to export, and therefore the only thing tending that dangerous way which I shall say, is, that I am and always will be with the utmost sincerity.
