In 1860 there were 798 schools of all kinds, with scholars on the roll. These figures represent 1 school to 422 persons, and 10 scholars to every 100 persons. The proportion of schools is now about 1 to every 370 persons, while the number of scholars has risen to 22 per hundred of the population. The leavening influence of education may be tested both by the census returns and by the marriage registers. In 1861, per cent. Of the adult males, and of the adult females could not read or write. Forty years later the percentages were for males, and for females. In 1860, 265 persons out of every thousand married could not sign the marriage register; in 1870, the number was still large, viz., 182; in 1880 it had fallen to 67, and in 1890 to 27, while in 1900 the number had declined to 14, the majority in all cases being persons not born in New South Tales.
