Book excerpt: Examining a variety of intriguing issues, this sociological study analyzes the impact global culture has had on the flora and fauna, people, economies, languages, and cultures of the Pacific for many centuries. The survey draws on findings from a 40-year research partnership, illustrating the effects of globalization from the perspective of a typical Samoan village and documenting the country's shift from baskets to buckets, from religious authority to a questioning democracy, and from in-kind work to a cash economy. Delving into questions such as When do Pacific emigrants stop sending money to their home village? Do villagers stop giving away fish when they get a refrigerator? and How do cell phones change villages? this argument contends that contemporary changes are presenting a more profound challenge to Samoan social institutions and society than at any other time in the past. Comprehensive and accessible, this guide is essential for those interested in the way global forces are shaping change in small Pacific nations.

Book Synopsis The Winds of Change by : Dr. Julie Shannon

Download or read book The Winds of Change written by Dr. Julie Shannon. This book was released on 2023-01-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you do when a life storm hits? Life storms such as divorce, job loss, illness, financial problems, empty nest, midlife crisis, family fractures, etc. create a world of chaos and confusion and often lead to quiet isolation, depending on the nature of the challenge. In more ordinary situations, someone may feel stuck in a life rut and seek the courage to pursue a new hobby, interest, or job and they need confidence-building tools. Just as a literal storm wreaks havoc in our lives, life reality storms can cause emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental challenges. People often won’t talk about them and can retreat into unhealthy isolation at best, or at worse, dive into dangerous self-medicating behaviors or suicidal tendencies. In The Winds of Change, Julie Shannon shares her own story of reframing life, as well as real-life stories of many others who overcame the unexpected and who and what encouraged them in their journey. Practical, definitive steps will be learned to successfully move through life realities and into a confident and abundant life.

Book Synopsis Winds of Change by : Sharon Haynes

Download or read book Winds of Change written by Sharon Haynes. This book was released on 2008-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storms will come into our life. Jesus said so in His Word. "In this world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" (John 6:33). Perhaps your storm in life is a current or past job loss, loss of a loved one, financial loss or loss of a reputation. None of us are immune. We do however, have a choice how we respond. We can emerge from the rubble embittered, broken and in bondage or we can elect to let Christ build something beautiful for His Kingdom's work. No one can make that choice for us. We must be passionately prepared when the storms come. Our trust must be placed in the one true Creator who can lead, comfort, teach and conform us into his image. With daily prayers and our obedience to His Word and teachings, it is possible to build a spiritual fortress around a home that will safeguard it from spiritual destruction. However, we must be willing to change from the inside- out. Sharon Haynes resides in Jackson, Tennessee. She and her husband, Jimmy, are the proud parents of 16-year old triplets. Sharon holds a Master's degree in counseling and has been a practicing therapist, volunteer counselor and has served on several community boards throughout the last ten years. She is currently employed with Augustine School in Jackson. She is an active member of her church. She has served as a choir member and in various capacities involving the children's ministry and as a Bible study leader.
