Download or read book The Great Sermon Tradition as a Fiscal Framework in 1 Corinthians written by Christopher L. Carter. This book was released on 2010-02-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Paul's theology of material possessions and where did it come from? Through demonstrating continuity in the broad fiscal thought of Jesus and Paul, Carter suggests that Paul owes his financial thought to the great sermon tradition. Carter establishes this by assessing Paul's historical environment and extant writings to display the plausibility that Paul knew the dominical tradition. Carter goes on to assess the likelihood that Paul knew the pre-synoptic sermon tradition because of its ubiquity in early church discipleship. The study finishes with the conclusion that Jesus and Paul's financial thought displays remarkable symmetry which cannot be explained merely by a common cultural environment. Consequently, it is deemed highly likely that Paul depends on the dominical tradition for the contours of his financial thought.

Book Synopsis Heralds and Community by : Bo Young Kang

Download or read book Heralds and Community written by Bo Young Kang. This book was released on 2016-08-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of the ongoing debate about Paul’s understanding of the relationship between his own mission and the church’s. While this study endorses some previous scholarship on Paul’s silence about the church’s proactive evangelism in his letters, it argues that explanations for such silence cannot be adequately made from exegetical conclusions on related texts alone. Rather, this study suggests that constructing a plausible conception of mission as understood by Paul, influenced by the impact of the Jesus-tradition and Jewish restoration eschatology, is essential for explaining Paul’s thinking. Dr Kang proposes that Paul’s silence regarding congregational evangelism is due to his unique two-pronged conception of mission – one being the event of eschatological heralds, the other being the event of eschatological community.

Book Synopsis Jesus in Context by : David Wenham

Download or read book Jesus in Context written by David Wenham. This book was released on 2021-11-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus changed our world forever. But who was he and what do we know about him? David Wenham's accessible volume is a concise and wide-ranging engagement with that enduring and elusive subject. Exploring the sources for Jesus and his scholarly reception, he surveys information from Roman, Jewish, and Christian texts, and also examines the origins of the gospels, as well as the evidence of Paul, who had access to the earliest oral traditions about Jesus. Wenham demonstrates that the Jesus of the New Testament makes sense within the first century CE context in which he lived and preached. He offers a contextualized portrait of Jesus and his teaching; his relationship with John the Baptist and the Qumran community (and the Dead Sea Scrolls); his ethics and the Sermon on the Mount, his successes and disappointments. Wenham also brings insights into Jesus' vision of the future and his understanding of his own death and calling.
