Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Supernatural in Tragedy The present volume, save for a few excisions and corrections, is substantially the thesis presented by me at Harvard University in 1911 for the doctorate in Comparative Literature. It makes no pretence to exhaust the field which it undertakes to survey; indeed, I hope that its publication may serve to stimulate additional research, not only in the drama of countries not here dealt with, but in other departments of literary activity. I trust, however, that the principles here enunciated are sufficiently well grounded to be a useful basis for such investigation. I desire to make a general acknowledgement of thanks to all the members of the Division of Modem Languages at Harvard whom I had occasion to consult in the course of the work, for helpful criticisms and suggestions; to Professor H. W. Smyth, for inspiration derived from his lectures on Greek literature; and to Professor E. K. Rand, for help in running down the quotation from Eusebius discussed in the section on the liturgical drama. I have endeavored to make the bibliography a complete list of books and articles dealing specifically with the supernatural in tragedy; but some items, particularly in the modem section, may well have escaped me, and I should be grateful for additions or corrections.
