Book Synopsis The Sorrels of Savannah by : Carla Ramsey Weeks

Download or read book The Sorrels of Savannah written by Carla Ramsey Weeks. This book was released on 2012-02-22. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sorrels of Savannah is a story of tragedy and triumph. The family lived during tumultuous times in America's history. Francis, the patriarch, built for himself and his family a lavish, privileged lifestyle in Savannah made possible, in part, by the institution of slavery. Their family was among the last generation of antebellum slave holding southerners whose way of life was challenged and forever changed by the Civil War and Reconstruction that followed. The Sorrels of Savannah is an interesting and readable account of a remarkable family--their individual personalities and traits, both honorable and dishonorable.

Book Synopsis Tales from the Haunted South by : Tiya Miles

Download or read book Tales from the Haunted South written by Tiya Miles. This book was released on 2015-08-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Tiya Miles explores the popular yet troubling phenomenon of "ghost tours," frequently promoted and experienced at plantations, urban manor homes, and cemeteries throughout the South. As a staple of the tours, guides entertain paying customers by routinely relying on stories of enslaved black specters. But who are these ghosts? Examining popular sites and stories from these tours, Miles shows that haunted tales routinely appropriate and skew African American history to produce representations of slavery for commercial gain. "Dark tourism" often highlights the most sensationalist and macabre aspects of slavery, from salacious sexual ties between white masters and black women slaves to the physical abuse and torture of black bodies to the supposedly exotic nature of African spiritual practices. Because the realities of slavery are largely absent from these tours, Miles reveals how they continue to feed problematic "Old South" narratives and erase the hard truths of the Civil War era. In an incisive and engaging work, Miles uses these troubling cases to shine light on how we feel about the Civil War and race, and how the ghosts of the past are still with us.

Book Synopsis Recollections of a Confederate Staff Officer by : Gilbert Moxley Sorrel

Download or read book Recollections of a Confederate Staff Officer written by Gilbert Moxley Sorrel. This book was released on 1905. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir takes the reader inside the workings of the Confederate army staff. Sorrel was a relatively unknown officer who rose through the ranks to become General Longstreet's most trusted associate. Sorrel's memoir makes no claims to strategic analysis. It simply relates what he saw and the events of which he was a part. His vantage point was, however, in many ways unique. His service with Longstreet brought him into the thick of many of the war's decisive engagements.

Book Synopsis Archeological Studies at the Sorrel-Weed House by : Kelly Westfield

Download or read book Archeological Studies at the Sorrel-Weed House written by Kelly Westfield. This book was released on 2017. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's introduction: "In January 2017, my interest in incorporating fieldwork as a part of a final project in Historical Archaeology coincided with the desire of the Sorrel-Weed House staff to investigate the cause of a depression in the floor of what the staff identifies as their carriage house basement. The Sorrel-Weed House, a privately owned Greek Revival mansion that is a prominent entity in Savannah's ghost tour industry, had just recently approached Laura Seifert, Co-Director of Digging Savannah and my instructor at Armstrong State University, about undertaking this as an archaeological study. Consequently, after submitting a proposal in early January, we were given permission by the Sorrel-Weed House to begin excavations in the basement of the carriage house to uncover the source of the depression in the floor. In total, our study spanned two semesters, and was conducted in spring 2017 and fall 2017".
